Food Bank for NYC’s 5th Annual Can-Do Awards Dinner

040808stipepaltrowsmall.jpgThe Food Bank for New York City held their 5th Annual Can-Do Awards Dinner and fund raiser last night at Chelsea Piers. For the past 25 years, the Food Bank has worked to end hunger by giving low-income New Yorkers access to affordable and healthy food. Last night's dinner was hosted by classy actor Stanley Tucci and attended by celebrities like Michael Stipe, Gwyneth Paltrow and Mike D; musical performances were by Angela McCluskey, Jill Hennessey, Joseph Arthur and Mike Mills.

The most memorable part of the event was a live auction hilariously conducted by Susie Essman, who Curb Your Enthusiasm fans know as Jeff's aggressive, outspoken wife. Exact fundraising figures aren't in yet, but Essman berated at least $25,000 out of the crowd. Overall, the event raised approximately $1 million for the Food Bank.

Another high point was Stephen Colbert's speech, which he began by welcoming "ladies, gentlemen... whatever option there may be tonight... hermaphrodites... Michael Stipe... It's not about loving me tonight, it's about loving the Food Bank." Colbert was there to present an award to MTV Network CEO Judy McGrath, and took the opportunity to "apologize for calling Viacom chief Sumner Redstone 'the crypt keeper' on my show... And I'd like to further apologize for bringing that up again right now."

Count on celebrities to be too clueless to realize that the major nutritional problem facing poor people in America is obesity, not hunger. I mean, this isn't Haiti.

wow, with rents remaining at unbelievable highs, food prices and utility prices skyrocketing, and the economy in recession you think that hunger is not a problem for New Yorkers? On top of that, signing up for food stamps is a long, confusing, and often fruitless process, which discourages many from signing up for this valuable program. Obesity is of course a problem for people in America because the cheapest food is the most loaded with fat and sugar... maybe we should be working to subsidize fruit and vegetable stands in poor neighborhoods, or support the work of programs like Food Bank which both provides emergency food relief, and educates new Yorkers on healthy eating habits.

the irony here is that an industry known for chronic eating disorders is leading the charge against hunger

I live in a fairly split neighborhood and I can see very clearly that the less-fortunate families have to feed their kids crap because they can't afford enough good food to fill their stomachs. True, veggies and fruit are not that expensive, but the stores that sell them fresh are and a plate of salad isn't going to keep a 10-year-old from being hungry. It's sad that this happens in our city and our country and people like Peter should look around at the people they live with before brushing off a problem that effects the quality of work, education and life for hundreds of thousands in NY
