On the heels of Florent's closure comes news that another one of the Meatpacking District’s pre-millennial hang-outs will walk the plank: The Hog Pit, a Southern dive bar and BBQ joint that opened in the late '90s, is the latest casualty of the neighborhood’s astronomical rent increases. Co-owner Felisa Dell sent an email to Eater today confirming the closure, which was brought on by a triple rent increase to 40K per month.
The Hog Pit’s fall won’t happen until January, when the lease runs out, but Dell wanted to give everyone plenty of time to come pay their respects and bitch at length about the city’s increasing Mall of Americanization. In the email, Dell speculates that property owners “are planning a Ralph Lauren Store” for the Ninth Avenue location.
Dell also points out that “the mayor and the State Liquor Authority are now only issuing Liquor Licenses until 2AM. It's very sneaky, but in 5 years the 4AM liquor license will be a thing of the past, without any community input.” Dell's now searching for a new space somewhere far, far away from the fratastic Meatpacking area, where the Hog Pit’s older sister, Hogs & Heifers, still defiantly squeals… for now.

Shhhh... keep it quiet. 57th Street is the new old Meatpacking District. The Upper East Side is the old new Lower East Side. Episcopalianism is the new Buddhism. Sinister tea is the new old artisanal gin martini.
I've never been able to understand why people are so complacent about Bloomberg. Granted, Giuliani was awful, but Bloomberg is a truly terrible mayor, as well.
How is this Bloomberg's fault?
First it's corporate surveillance cameras on every street corner; now it's 2 A.M. last calls to keep us sober and compliant. That sneaky bastard.
Bloomberg is not an independent, he's a two-faced Anarcho-capitalist. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!
If he wanted to keep us compliant, wouldn't he be better off letting us get as drunk as we wanted?
And if he were an anarcho-capitalist and wanted unchecked power for businesses, wouldn't he let bars stay open as late as they wanted?
New York will not be New York if we don't keep our bars open until 4 AM. I have embraced all of Mayor Bloomberg's initiatives to "clean up" NYC, but the 2 AM liquor licenses are the worst idea I've heard in a while.
2 AM closing times? that means 1:30 last call. this could bring back the after hours bars.
JMH,
when are you in a more compliant state to veer off path & question authority; drunk or sober? Drunk. This is why people are more likely to speed in their cars, fight, excessively gamble and cheat on their significant others when alcohol is involved.
You need to read "Machinery of Freedom " by David D. Friedman.
Anarcho-capitalist's don't believe in total unchecked power; they believe that established third parties should mediate all disputes. That "corporate third party" is New York's City Hall headed by Bloomberg.
What law school did you go to?
prohibition did not work. 2 am closings will not either. I suppose I won't care if it happens in 5 years from now though. I'll be too old to hang out till 4 am anymore.
I'm curious why the meatpacking district is getting attacked so heavily. They killed Filter 14, The Village Idiot, The Hog Pit.. I'm sure Hogs and Heifers is on the radar. NYC = The New Disneyland.
I have a great new name for the Meatpacking District! How about Macy's!!! or Bloomingdales!
Blah!
I stopped going there when Pastis started playing Vivaldi at lunchtime. My mom goes there.
do we realli need another store on boutique in the meatpacking district? hmm..i guess its better than another bar or club--louda*s drunks
Hasn't the Meatpacking district been the new Hoboken for about 7 years? I mean when was the last time anyone from NYC actually went there?
2am closing times?!? Where can I find out more about this... it's distressing!
Well, I once went her with my boyfriend and one of his female friend two weeks later he dumped me to date her. So I don't think I will miss this place.
