13-Year-Old Arrested in Columbia Student's Death

2008_04_minghuiyu.jpgA 13-year-old boy was arrested and charged with second-degree manslaughter in the Friday night death of a Columbia graduate student. According to a Daily News source, the boy bragged to his 15-year-old friend before chasing Ming-Hui Yu, "Look what I do to this one."

The teen and his friends apparently hassled Yu, a 24-year-old Ph.D. student in statistics and a teaching fellow, at the median at Broadway and 122nd Street. The Post reports one "punched him in the face, while the other kept watch." (The Daily News adds that the police are "don't believe it was robbery. It was some sort of altercation."--Yu still had his wallet and backpack.) In an attempt to escape them, Yu ran into the street, where he was hit by a Jeep. Yu later died of his injuries.

The 13-year-old's aunt said, as he was led out of the precinct, "It was a mistake," while another relative said, "pray for him." The police are still looking for his accomplice, as well as examining surveillance footage from the area. Zhou Changyia, one of Yu's roommates told the Post, "They're just kids. It's hard to say what to do with them."

Yu had just walked his girlfriend home to her 123rd Street and Broadway apartment; Chao Sun told reporters, as friends gathered at a memorial outside Yu's apartment on 121st Street, "He’s a really nice guy, and he’s worried about others. I can’t imagine he would do anything to harm other people." Yu had graduated from the University of Science and Technology of China and was the public relations head of Columbia University's Chinese Students and Scholars Association. The Chinese Consulate is working to help his parents travel to NY.

Columbia president Lee Bollinger issued a statement, mourning Yu's loss and refers to Columbia-area safety (Morningside Heights is safe, but "it is nevertheless imperative that we all take reasonable precautions appropriate to life in a large metropolitan environment"). Read it below:

Dear Members of the Columbia Community:

I am writing to share very sad news about one of our graduate students.

Last night a PhD student in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Minghui Yu, was struck by an automobile two blocks north of our main campus at 122nd Street and Broadway while he was apparently fleeing an attempted robbery on the sidewalk. The student was taken to St. Luke's Hospital but passed away as a result of the severe injuries he had sustained.

An NYPD investigation is underway and is being supported by the University's Department of Public Safety which, last night following university procedures, circulated an alert to student affairs deans at all of our schools with information about possible suspects in the attempted robbery.

As a community we mourn the loss of one of our members, and especially of a young person with much to look forward to in a life of promise. The University's counseling services are available to anyone who feels he or she could benefit from expert support in response to this deeply sad event. Please do not hesitate to visit Counseling and Psychological Services on the 8th floor of Lerner Hall today from 1-5 p.m., or call at any time 212-854-2878 if you feel such assistance would be helpful to you.

While incidents of crime have been significantly reduced in New York over recent decades, and the area of Morningside Heights is within one of the safest precincts in the city, it is nevertheless imperative that we all take reasonable precautions appropriate to life in a large metropolitan environment. Our Department of Public Safety has worked closely with the NYPD in safeguarding members of our University Community and offers a range of services – including safety escorts, evening shuttle buses and directed patrols – that help ensure students, faculty and staff can both be, and feel, secure while living, studying and working here. We constantly review and seek to improve public safety operations. If you would like more information on these services, go to: www.columbia.edu/cu/publicsafety, or call 212-854-2797.

The family of the graduate student has been notified. We will begin plans for a memorial event on campus. For today, I know we are united as a community in mourning the tragic loss of a young life.

there is a mistaken sense of power through violence in MANY POOR comunities! Adults do not guide, or work as any sort of role model for the MANY MANY MANY kids they poop out to then neglect! These kids recieve either violence or total neglect by adults: a cycle of misery that end up involving others many times! Stop pooping out babies!

  • tcstudent

In reply to this ignorant message...

Why are blacks so violent? At only 13 years old, we can all agree that this kid is going to be a career criminal/murderer.

Do you remember who shot up columbine highschool? not a black kid.

who shot up virginia tech? not a black kid.

so obviously, it is ignorant and rash for you to ask why blacks are so violent!!! violence goes across all races, ethnicities, etc. stop trying to blame the black race...

and if blacks are so violent, maybe its from who knows, years of being held in captivity, raped, lynched, etc. just maybe.....

    question:

why do all white people smell like wet dogs?

  • kimchi lover

Maybe if you got your asses off the internet and had real friends you would realize that...

    blacks aren't all thugs

    asians aren't all career mongers

jews aren't all career mongers and insidious

    whites aren't all racist klansman

"Oh just because black teens committing the crime, doesn't reflect on the black community as a whole"

So, how many times have we heard that line before?

Actually, if you look at the numbers by statistics, more than half of the black male population commit a crime/go to jail in their lifetime.

That's more than enough for me to generalize. Sure, there are a couple good ones who "make it out," and I know them in school, then again, how many? 1 out of 10? 2 out of 10? Exactly..

Oh and, how many times have you heard on the news that another Columbia (or non Columbia) student (or non student) getting killed by YET ANOTHER group of blacks? Hahaha, ask yourself that, then tell me this is an isolated case again.

  • pug_ster

Obama just care about their own anyways. If wants to find the next racists, they don't have to do anything but to look in their own backyards.

  • sakebalboa

holy crap you guys are racist.

  • RoDogg

The sad thing about this post is that if this student was black there wouldn't be 60+ responses. But let the victim be white, Asian, etc., that is when everyone and their momma want to come out and start blaming blacks this and black that. Violence is everywhere people, it comes in many different shapes, forms, and COLORS. America was founded on violence! Another stat for all you who are quick to blame blacks for everything from the Titanic sinking to JFK assassination, the majority of crimes committed in this country is done by whites. The media fools you to believe blacks do more crimes because black crimes are broadcast more over the news and newspapers then white crimes so every time you turn on your news you'll see black faces because that is what they want you to see while white crimes go unheard of.

BLACKS DO NOT THINK VIOLENCE IS COOL, IMMATURE UNEDUCATED LACKING DISCIPLINE AND GOOD HOME TRAINING AND PARENTING PEOPLE ONLY THINK IT'S COOL!

Ming-Hui Yu's death is tragedy. My condolences to his friends and family.

Even if one lived in New York for 80 years and saw crimes everyday and all of them were committed by blacks, this does mean that African Americans are criminals or that they have a proclivity to crime.

This is because there are dozens upon dozens of good, upstanding, dependable and humane black boys for every one of the hoodlums like the ones in this story and those that other commentors have seen.

It is unfair to slander kids who keep their noses clean, work hard and try to live decent lives because they happen to be the same color as low-life like the kids who attacked Ming-Hui.

Maybe we should start listening to some of the kids who grow up right and helping them to figure how to assure that all the other kids share those experiences and attitudes.

Such action may not be the end all solution, but it is something we can all do and it shows respect and support for the vast silent majority of our African American fellow citizens who stand tall and do the right thing.

Yeah, we'll pray for the little bastard....pray that him and his little gangsta buddies are eliminated from the gene pool before they begin to breed!

you're damned if you do and damned it you don't,

excuse me while I download more porn from the internets.

  • jibbly

Wow babyhitler, thanks for the awesome description! Excuse me while I do the robot dance, study math, then go to law school, all without smiling or crying!

  • jaja007

yeah. its a great idea to make generalizations about how asians are robots/unfeeling/not emotional

#61- not only do asian kids have to deal with growing up in the hood in poverty but they have to deal with white kids making t-shirts like busted tees with "where my dog's at" chinese food, black kids robbing their asses and beating them up, spanish kids calling them "chino" every 5 seconds and yet they still come out getting good jobs. Asians are weird. They are like robots. not totally unfeeling but not very emotional. they are like the borg. not overly happy not overly sad. Just living each day to make a buck and that's it. They are like jews without the insidiousness.

  • poopmast

#47 They resent that fact that asians invalidate the that growing up in the "hood," "single mother," and "hip hop" excuses.

There are plenty of asians who grew up in the hood to single parent households, listening to hip hop who go on to become doctors, lawyers, business analysts, investment bankers, and hedge fund managers.

Reason probably being because they seem to be doing a lot of stupid things to other races. It's not a condemnation of an entire race so get over that bullshit.

Buy a scanner and listen to it. 70% of the descriptions for a perp reads male black wearing all black with a hoodie. And that's in neighborhoods where very few blacks live. I can't imagine what the percentage is in the black neighborhoods.

Castrate the thugs and plug up the women until they get their shit together.

One of the biggest tragedies during the slavery days was that families were torn apart. WTF? That more or less ended nearly 150 years ago. Are they trying to keep it real by keeping that situation going independent of slave holders? Why is it that so many black men can't get their shit together and marry the mother of their child, and stay with her for more than a month?

  • AvenueHebrew

I'd like to know why it's necessary to take this incident between a handful of individuals and turn it into a blanket condemnation of an entire race.

  • Whammo

"Yu had just walked his girlfriend home to her 123rd Street and Broadway apartment"

I don't see how he can protect his girlfriend when he lets a 13 year old chase him into traffic.

No mention of the race of the perps, interesting. No bias crime here?

  • femiredwood

Whats really tragic is all the racism on this board. You guys sicken me.

Violence is not exclusive of African Americans. What do you call what we are doing in Iraq? Oh yeah, freedom. Right.

What principles do you think this country was founded on? Do you think Native Americans said "Here, take my land and rape my women". No, violence was used. And last time I checked, the pilgrims were white.

Within their own culture of hip-hop-endorsed thuggery, giving a sh1t about no one but themselves, and a complete lack of respect for anyone or anything other than perhaps the closest members of their own posse, these two are pretty much right at the age to start fathering their own hopelessly cast-off spawn to begin the cycle anew, are they not?

Props to Nivek: I was born dirt-poor, but nothing in anything that I was ever exposed to even *hinted* that this meant I was free to visit violence upon others as a means to, what is it, "relieve the boredom", or whatever is the excuse-du-jour typically offered on behalf of this type of human waste?

Spear Chucker: one could suggest that the tone of many of your posts is almost always the same as race-baiting trollism...except for the fact that your main question is *always valid*: WHERE'S AL SHARPTON? As someone else wrote about Bill Cosby's no-nonsense opinions being shunned, seriously, where the f*ck is Al Sharpton? Except, of course, that he'd be pretty busy, since it's mostly the blacks committing the senseless acts of violence in all the headlines so he'd have a lot to talk about. 'Course, he doesn't even bother to address black-on-black violence, which must be under-reported like you wouldn't believe. Charlatan, plain and simple.

I'm white. I wonder what the opinion is on stuff like this of the 99.99% of black folks who are non-insane, non-criminal, non-thug wastes of carbon and oxygen who, despite having likely faced injustices in possibly every facet of their lives, have sought to overcome them and to cope and exist and succeed and attain just like everyone else. How bad does something like this make them feel, knowing how it reinforces stereotypes for so many and how it will make things harder for them to face because of any possible backlash, or strengthened lingering resentment?

Didn't the criminal element interpret Dinkins' mayoral election as a signal to tee off on whitey? The ONE thing that worries me about an Obama presidency -- because it sure as hell isn't anything about his qualifications, or background, or intelligence, or apparent will to do things differently than Gummint Inc. -- is what the stupidest of the stupid ne'er-do-wells will interpret that to mean, in terms of never having to face up to their own internally-created problems of overpopulation, lack of focus in education, blaming problems on others, perpetuating the psychology of entitlement, and resorting to crime to right perceived wrongs, if not simply for fun. You know what, man? I hate to say it, but if "spokespeople" such as rappers are going to continue to promote violence (inter- AND intra-race) as a way to succeed, "crusaders" such as Al Sharpton are going to continue to cherry-pick opportunities to play the race card, and straight-talkers such as Cosby are going to continue to be ignored, then sadly the best way to avoid being brutalized or killed by one of these savages for no reason whatsoever is to move oneself as far away from them as possible. By that I definitely mean non-whites who also do not wish to die for no reason. Then stand back, let the cities self-destruct, and watch the gene pool improve. ENOUGH OF THIS F*CKING BULLSH1T ALREADY, FOR CHRISSAKE.
