OK, I agree, jaja007, that race is not a 100% determinant of criminality. Hell, I'll even agree that the literal majority (somewhere over 50%) of blacks are not criminals.

But in New York, over 60% of our criminals (and murderers, look through the NYTimes archives for the 2007 murder stats) are black. Regardless, I would never discriminate against any individual black person because of this, really. And usually, discussions about race are bound to go nowhere.

It just pisses me off that in this city, the largely black beneficiaries of our extensive social welfare safety net are not content to have the charity of New York's working class, but proceed to steal and kill with all the leisure time they don't spend working.

#36 - An indictment is a formal accusation, or being charged. A grand jury of your peers have to determine if there's probable cause that you've done anything wrong, and it's entirely pre trial and pre sentencing. I don't think it'd be hard to convince a grand jury that they wouldn't have done or wanted to do the same thing if their lives were very seriously threatened. Good lawyers would bring up examples like this. If you're not indicted, a judge can't sentence you at all regardless of bullshit minimums.

As an NYU student who lives on 137th, this is pretty frightening. I've never felt threatened in this neighborhood, I think it's a lot to do with how you hold yourself. Maybe I should rethink listening to my iPhone as I walk home at 4am like last night.

Have a family member outside of the city give one to you. Behave. Don't consent to searches. Behave. Only use it when severe enough force proportional to your weapon (tazer v. gun) is used on you. Your life and limb is worth it, and no reasonable grand jury will indict.

If this man had time to run, his life could have been saved if he had the right to be armed and availed himself of it. There are a lot of projects up here, and an overwhelming and astonishing amount of hatred toward whites and asians. I have been assaulted up here, in broad daylight. It's just not safe. This article is a little confusing. The title indicates that the victim died; the first two paragraphs say he is in serious condition. The third paragraph starts with "The death of the teaching fellowing..." which doesn't make sense, and then the update about the victim's death follows.

If you just change the title to Columbia Student Run Down While Fleeing Muggers and insert the update before the third paragraph, the article would flow much better.

The update paragraph's first sentence is too long and would be better as two sentences, such as: The victim, Ming-Hui Yu died from his injuries. After refusing to surrender his belongings to the muggers, who punched and kicked him, he fled his attackers and was struck by the Jeep.

This is similar to the Michael Sandy case, where a group of white teens looking to rob Sandy chased him onto the Belt Parkway where he was struck. Michael Griffith was similarly fatally struck on the Belt Parkway in 1986 when fleeing a gang of assailants in Howard Beach.

This kids gotta start looking out before they cross the street. You'd think they'd have learned that by the time they're in college.

Law & Order will be doing an episode based on this crime. Except the criminals will be middle-class and white.

This happened last year to an NYU kid in Harlem. He fled from the would be muggers and got hit by a car in the street.
