Rainy days in the city make me realize what a crew of dwarves New Yorkers are. I always avoided the business school area in college on rainy days b/c everyone's umbrella would be at my eye level. And, yeah, you especially do not deserve a golf umbrella if you are under 5'4". Toads.

I lived in New Orleans for many years and whenever it suddenly started to downpour, everyone's hands would immediately cover their cups of beer. Not their heads. No one cared about their hair getting wet, but they certainly didn't want their $1 beer getting watered down. Heh heh. What a great difference in cultures.

to FrankMartin- so long as you keep the umbrella high above your head enough that you're not catching people in the eye with its mighty spears, nor forcing people off the side of the sidewalk with its mighty girth, then I, as a golf-umbrella-hater, thank you. I might even like you as you spare me from several seconds of rain as your umbrella passes high above me.

I admit I have one of those golf umbrellas, but I make a point of always "going high", out of respect for others. And I close it way before bus entry etc.. It is so damn large but it works so well. Is that OK with the golf umbrella haters?

I too share the umbrella hate. I understand of course, using one when it is really raining, but I find NYers open the thing up in even the lightest of drizzles. Spend some time in rainy European climates like London and Amsterdam. You almost never see umbrellas coming out unless it's absolutely pouring. Makes us all look like over pampered babies afraid of getting a bit damp. A good coat, and a hat goes a long way.

god i hate umbrella users, those were great reminders joe. i also hate when umbrella users walk along the edges of buildings where the awnings are, blocking people who have been caught without unbrellas. selfish much? oh, & chuzzlewit, complaining about the complaining is just lame.

Yeah, I don't know what to say about the recent rash of etiquette reminders on Gothamist. I'm the kind of person that thinks those with poor manners should be executed, but I also feel like I'm sort of being lectured. It's a paradox wrapped in an enigma!

Those obnoxiously large umbrellas are usually golf umbrellas and more often than not, used by the smallest of people. Umbrella etiquette does not exist in this city. Bane of my existence!!!

I can't stand the people with the umbrellas that have a 12 inch metal spike on the top. They always walk up the subway stairs with the umbrella closed and that spike pointed back at the person behind them.
