Fans of Pat Kiernan Rejoice: NY1 to Go HD
April 30th marks the date when cable viewers in Queens and Brooklyn can see NY1 in glorious high definition joining those in Staten Island who got it first. Fans of Pat Kiernan who live in Manhattan (along with New Jersey and the Hudson Valley) will have to wait a bit longer, with Time Warner promising to roll it out for them by the end of the year.
Since cable TV is not like broadcast TV, there isn’t one transmitter to upgrade allows everyone to get HD broadcasts. Cable TV has several “head ends”, basically distribution centers which bring service to its customers that need to be adjusted. Therefore, Time Warner cannot flip one switch to make the change everywhere.

I think my trading in my box for a HD version finally forced this.
I HEART Pat Kiernan.
I HEART Pat Kiernan in HD even more.
can't wait to see "In The Papers" in HD...though I could just read the paper (such a guilty pleasure, that segment)
I want to muss Pat Keirnan's helmet of hair every time I see him on TV. In HD, this desire will only become more intense.
Oh great now we can see the NY1 jingle girl ad the other awesome musicians in HD
Pat is the best thing since sliced bread, and he's from Canada.
I think there is an insider selling ad space on "In The Papers" - some of those page crops they do feature the attached ads a little too well.
Yo baby, the heck with Pat. Jill Scott and Shazia Khan in HD!
Never mind Pat...I want to see Annika Pergament in HD!
NY1: lose the Sleepy's commercials. They suck and the company is a racket. If I see one more young, happy slacker jumping for joy on a mattress, I'm going to puke.
There ain't no more hot looking anchors/reporters on NY1 anymore since Gigi Stone left. I still like Pat though.
Pat Kiernan is probably the most lame & boring reporter in the history of news.
But hes still quite good.
I don't know, I'm a little afraid of Roma Torre in HD. Not that I just admitted to watching Theater Talk every week...
Who cracked the whip on Roger Clark, he seems more subdued this year.
GREAT! Now I get to see Cheryl Wills' lazy eye in High-Definition!
pat kiernan is the best anchor period. None of that "how you doing liz!" fluff. he's just got a nice cadence about him.
Wait, I just had a horrible thought:
Dominic Carter!
pat is a fine anchor indeed. no bells and whistles and all the "in-crowd" crap you get on the today show. i like hearing his voice in the morning and i missed him last week. was he on vacation?
THIS IS THE BEST CLIP OF ROGER CLARK EVER!

Having nightmares of George Whipple's caterpillar eyebrows in 1080i.
Wow!
Finally something Gothamist commenters can agree on.
Pat Kiernan is a uniter!
I always find it hilarious that he's Canadian, since he's the main anchor in NYC.
Oh and he totally is the best. I liked it when he hosted that trivia show on VH1 too.
And I totes love Roger Clark too.
I think Pat recently became a U.S. citizen, didn't he? No matter - he is awesome either way.
However, Roger Clark is a bumbling idiot... Shelly Goldberg is an annoying old hag...Neil Rosen is the absolute WORST film critic I have ever seen (and he is a pompous prick in person too -- I used to work in the film industry)... and Jill Scott desperately needs to update her repertoire of jaw-droppingly bad puns.
The Sleepy's commercials and the faux-Sex & the City car service ads are horrible, and the new interstitial musician segments (Natalie Cole? Nuttin' but Strings?) are pretty bad too.
That being said, I am totally addicted to NY1, but I live in Manhattan and therefore will have to continue watching in boring old standard format...
Sorry, not Natalie Cole. Paula Cole...? whatever... the one who looks like a complete ho in the ad.
Hooray, useless news goes HD. Oh wait, we've already got it in the likes of CBS, NBC, FOX, ABC, My9, and CW11.
Let's all agree to switch off that odious "sex in the city" car ad that come on 20 minutes after the hour.
When the Nielsen ratings drop, maybe NY1 management will tell them to get a new - and less abrasive - commercial.
Until then, let's just not use that car service.
I turn channels every time it appears, and forget to turn back, so, it must hurt other NY1 sponsors.
"sometimes he just takes me home at night." "ooh girl!"
brutal. if it comes on at the wrong point in my wake-up process, that commercial ruins the first two hours of my day.
