Police Hope Bike Will Lead to Times Square Bomber

In hopes of more leads, the NYPD has re-released the photograph of the bike they believe belongs to the person who bombed the Times Square army recruiting center on March 6. The police also revealed more details about the circa 1980s bike. From the Daily News:

"Someone might have sold this recently at a garage sale in the fall, when they were cleaning up," NYPD Lt. Dennis Briordy said of the 10-speed Ross bike.

"The bike is in relatively good shape," he said. "For that reason we don't think it spent the last 20, 30 years being banged around the City of New York."

The bike, which was found in a dumpster a few blocks away, has handlebars are wrapped in electric tape and a sticker from the "Yonkers Cycle Center," a closed store whose old employees don't remember anything about it.

The police believe the Times Square bombing is connected to the 2005 bombing outside the British Consulate and last year's Mexican Consulate bombing. A bicyclist was seen near those bombings, but the bike was a mountain bike. A former NYPD bomb squad detective tells the Times, "When you have an individual bomb-builder like that, they are usually someone who keeps to themselves. They don’t share a great social life, and they tend to be introverts."

There is a $15,000 reward for information leading to the bomber's conviction (call Crimestoppers at 800-577-TIPS). The News' Michael Daly even writes a letter to the bomber, asking why.

the straws. they're being grasped for.

who the hell rides a 'ross' in 2008?

well, Navin, I believe that someone who's going to be bombing Times Square and then disposing of the bike doesn't really care who the manufacturer is.

Why would someone throw a perfectly good bike in a dumpster if it was used in a crime? Wouldn't it be easier to just lean it up against a light pole and let the normal street thieves take it?

I feel sorry for the bike. It will end up its days in some police storage facility, alone and abandoned, never seeing the affects of congestion pricing.

man they are really closing the net on this guy.

where is det. goren? or det taylor? or det amsterdam? or det yokas or det sipowicz? or det dunbar? or...umm, this is nothing like tv.

i ride an old ross road bike. it gets me from point a to point b. what's wrong with ross?

The letter asking "Why?" is stupid.

Why?

Because he was fucking angry! He's a bomb-guy, and one of the few luxuries afforded by being a bomb-guy is that you can blow shit up without having logical, rational reasons to blow shit up!

So you mean all the money spent on big brother cameras did not capture an image of the person? Good going NYPD - keep wasting money on cameras that are useless to prevent crime and even more so afterward.

I feel really safe knowing a bomb went off in the middle of one if not the busiest place in America and the police are unable to find the person who did it.

A slightly lighter shade of blue and that was my first 10 speed. Damn. Who knew Ross was still in business.

[9] good point. Cameras can read your license plate ($$$!) but cannot get a good make on terrorist.

Snoopy you crack me up bike thieves so tru. Honestly i hope the guy is never caught. Ive had a blast reading about this and knowing someone hates violence and armies as much as I do. Get it?

Well, er, um … actually as far as police work goes this isn’t too bad.

That bike hasn’t been manufactured since like 1985. If it is clean with newly wrapped handlebars that means it’s been SOMEWHERE for a while and someone knows the bike.

It is a cheap-ass, crap, throwaway bike (note the one-piece crank – garbage) so pretty much ideal for a drive by/bike by type crime.

Leaving aside the strange decision to throw the bike in the trash (maybe he was being followed?) I think our bomber was pretty smart. I’ll wager that his prints aren’t on the thing at all.

That leaves whoever sold it to him. Maybe they think that gestures like this – while I am in sympathy with the bomber’s views on violence and war – could result in injuries to others and as such are in fact you know CRIMES. In which case the seller might recognize the bike and say “hey!” You never know.

GET REAL! The cops found an abandoned bike in a dumpster. How in the hell can they trace that bike back to the incident? Are there some nitrate deposits left on the frame?

These guys are way too much watching CSI.

If they can read the word Ross on the frame from surveillance cameras wouldn't you think they would have a good picture of the person who dropped off the package? Also what evidence is there that the biker was the bomber?

Dumb cops looking for some street cred.

Maybe I missed the part where they explained this a couple weeks ago, but could anyone please tell me exactly WHY the police believe this bike was ridden by the culprit?

Other than the bomber was riding a bike and they found this one in a dumpster kinda near Times Square. is there anything else?

Actually they have no proof that the bomber actually rode a bicycle. They assumed from the footage that there was some activity near the scene that perhaps an individual spotted leaving the scene riding a bike was involved in the bombing.

I know where inspector Clouseau is, but where is Kojak or Columbo now that we need them?
