Last Night's Action: A Win When It's Needed

2006_10_srangerslogo.jpgRangers 2, Penguins 1 (OT): Barring a Mets-like collapse, the Rangers will make the playoffs. Monday's victory probably boosted their spirits, too. Chris Drury scored in overtime after assisting on Jaromir Jagr's goal in regulation. At 93 points with three games remaining, the Rangers are one point away from clinching and tied with the Devils for the fourth spot in the Eastern Conference.

But catching the Devils and the home ice in the first round of the playoffs won't be easy. The Devils have more wins, despite their 0-7 mark against the Rangers, and they have a game in hand. The clubs do close their seasons against each other, however. Neither team has been lighting up the ice lately, but the Devils are among the coldest teams in hockey. Home ice doesn't mean all that much. Neither does momentum. But if the Rangers aren't firing on all cylinders on their way into the Stanley Cup playoffs, things could be over quickly.

Mediocre effort, good result. If it weren't for "Jesus H." Chris Drury, we don't get 2 points here. The team MUST find scoring or the playoffs are going to be over and over fast.
