Tractor-Trailer Hits Williamsburg Building

2008_03_tractort.jpg

Yikes: A tractor-trailer crashed into a building at Kent and N. 11th Street in Brooklyn this morning. No injuries have been reported, but the building has been evacuated (there are apartments on the second floor) and the Buildings Department has been called.

And while some are calling the location Greenpoint, we're using the Williamsburg-starts- at-N.14th-Street route.

We can only wish that this happened while all the kickballers a congregating at Turkey's Nest. But otherwise, as long as it didn't hit Mug's or Teddy's, it is not really news worthy.

So that's what I heard this morning. I live at Bedford and N. 12th and I heard some sort of boom and some sirens. I didn't see any smoke out the back window, so I ignored it.

What this area is called depends on who you talk to.

Some old school locals still call the area The Northside (and some say that this area was never known as Williamsburg until the mid- to late-90s). When I moved here ten years ago the previous tenant of my apartment left a map from 1968 on the wall. The map showed the area as Northside and the area called Williamsburg was well south of Broadway. At the time that I moved here, there were also signs on lampposts along Bedford Ave and other streets calling it The Northside Business District. Depending on who I am talking to, I'll say that I live in Williamsburg or Greenpoint, but I'll also say Northside if I'm talking to a local.
