Lights Out: Earth Hour at 8 p.m. Tonight

Today between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., people in timezones all over the world will be turning off their lights for Earth Hour. World Wildlife Fund started the event as a way to "deliver a powerful message to the citizens and leaders of the world about the need for action."

Twenty-eight cities are officially participating--in San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge will go dark--others, like NYC and LA, are not. However, time may tell as it originated in Sydney last year (the Sydney Opera House's lights will be turned off) and grew from there. Heck, McDonald's is turning off all of its golden arches in Canada!

While some people might think of Earth Hour as stunt, it's still a good time to review ways to conserve energy. Here are 100 tips from Con Edison and tips from the NRDC. When we interviewed actor-environmentalist Ed Begley Jr., he made some suggestions, like buying locally and putting non-essential power on a power strip that you switch off when you're not home.

here is the only tried and true way to save energy and the planet. Buy a gun. load it with bullets and shoot yourself in the head. Humanity is a cancer that will doom the earth and the environment. Earth Hour is just a way for liberals to feel good about themselves for an hour. Then it's back to polluting the environment. Celebrities and their huge carbon footprints are the worst to talk about saving the environment. If you look at every other creature on the planet they eat, take a shit and let their carcasses feed the earth. Humans won't even let their bodies be recycled when they put themselves in coffins that will take 1000 years to biodegrade. How's that for a big fuck you to recycling?

Helping the environment is a GREAT thing, and it's very necessary.

HOWEVER, babyhitler is right. I hope the liberals are proud of themselves this evening.

Symbolic gestures have real meaning.

And the fact that it's sparking discussion on the issues shows that it has helped more than doing nothing. Ergo this will be a success.

Also it's shame NYC isn't participating.

This kind of thing has been discouraged in the past... if too many people did it, all the lights suddenly turning back on at 9pm could conceivably knock out the power.

so tell us, babyhitler...when do you plan on shooting yourself in the head?

after I shoot your mother and feed her remains to you Irishyankee.

Turn the lights out for an hour...?

Well it did give me something to laugh about for a bout thirty seconds.

Idiotic.

I wish the lights in the empty skyscrapers in the city were switched off every night...yes, it's a beautiful skyline we have to look at, but I'd rather have them turned off to save energy.

We should figure out why every effort to green the planet or save energy means the human race has to sacrifice something. I'm not turning the lights out. I need to see.

babyhitler,

How low can you sink?

I'm glad to have only just learned that it's all the liberals' fault. Cueballing off of that logic (ahem), how are the conservatives doing their part to offset the heinous effects of Earth Hour -- leaving their Escalades idling the whole time? Or maybe trying to strong-arm some new plan to, say, destroy pristine lands drilling in search of dubious oil reserves that at most would address about 1% of the daily oil usage in the US while giving tax breaks to the richest oil companies on Earth? Yeah, that would do it.

We were watching an episode of Banacek on WLNY at 8:00.

If you don't care about anything else, save money.
We know ConEd keeps going up, up, up.
If it's not in use, TURN IT OFF.
Not just for an hour, but all the time.
You never need to live in the dark or not watch a show. Just use your energy wisely. Like I tell the kids, "Every time Mommy's home, a Polar Bear dies." (only kidding, kinda, but she knows no "off".)
And, BabyHitler my compost bin is just waiting for you. Just lay off the antipsychotics for a few days so they don't wind up in my green beans.

Dadoc

Dadoc,

I'm hopelessly out of touch, but your avatar seems either quasi-Luna Park, or something Decemberists-ly. Take no offense either way -- rock on .

such a sweetie, babyhitler...a true testament to humanity, which, as you've already enlightened us, is the "cancer that will doom the earth and the environment". maybe if you go ahead and get the ball rolling by shooting yourself, the rest of us will follow suit...or not.

btw, my mother's already dead so good luck with that.
