Long Island Teacher Accused of Sex with Student

2008_03_wantaghteach.jpgA 25-year-old female math teacher and track coach at Wantagh High School was accused of having sex with a 16-year-old male student. Heather Kennedy was arrested yesterday, charged with statutory rape and released on $35,000 bail.

According to police, the student had text-messaged Kennedy on March 19 and picked her up. After a few hours together, they went to the Massapequa High School parking lot where he "asked his teacher...if she wanted to have sex and she agreed."

The student broke his midnight curfew and, since his cellphone died, apparently called his father from Kennedy's phone, claiming he was with friends. But his father didn't believe him and the student eventually owned up to being with Kennedy. Detective Lt. Richard Zito said, "We believe it was a one-time incident."

Kennedy was immediately suspended with pay and is described as a well-liked teacher. One senior said Kennedy helped her get into Iona College, "She was the kind of teacher, if you had a problem, you could talk to her, and she would listen." Another said, "I'm really shocked. She's an amazing teacher. She's willing to do anything with the students."

    Apparently she didn't teach spelling.

You guys are rediculously ignorant. Being younger than all of you are I feel I am at serious advantage in comprehending the intensity of this subject. You all are ignorant enough to only see the anaesthetics of this situation. Oh shes ugly, west coast teachers are hott. Oh this kids a hero. Hell no.

I goto Wantagh High. This teacher was a great math teacher, I am MAJOURLY shocked that she did this. This is unheard of, she had to be wasted. No doubt. Many kids now HATE the boy who she had intercourse with he, hes (and her horrible decision making) jeopardize the high school career of many students. She is the reason why many kids are passing their math classes. I can't believe you people. She did something horrible and serious, but the kid shouldn't recieve any repercussion?

Whatever, Jen Chung-- it's obvious you must have been fooling around with your journalism advisors since your success can hardly be attributed to your copy-editing merits alone ...

  • Jen Chung

wendoza, my very public secret is that I never had a journalism advisor! SHHH!

Whatever, Jen Chung -- You must have been fooling around with your journalism advisors since you surely didn't excel based on your copy-editing merits alone ...

Under 18 will get you twenty.

Underage, is still a minor legally what ever the sex of the victim.

Growing up in HS in the 1950's this would have been

a young man's fantasy to be sure. It's legendary

how hard it was to get a condom back then almost

    impossible at that age.

if by weird power-dynamic, you must mean super-awesome kinky power dynamic. and then, if that is what you meant, i'd agree.

  • consensual or not she's his teacher and she knows better. it's rape.

  • Jen Chung

People, it's statutory rape! And the other thing that's disturbing is that she was his teacher - there's definitely a weird power-dynamic going on.

  • Steven

How is this rape? He ask her if she wanted to have sex with him and he said yes. It's not like she forced herself on him or anything.

Well duh, parents would generally be horrified by a 25-year-old male teacher deflowering their 16-year-old daughter (or, really, any 25-year-old), and, well, fair's fair. You gotta enforce this on both sides, even though we obviously got a raging double standard for boys and girls' sexuality.

"...she was described as a well-liked teacher."

I bet she was, eh eh? Nudge nudge, wink wink, say no more...

God, we could go on all night.

A female teacher having sex with a male student might be less likely to be predatory than a male teacher with a female student, but the fact is that teachers shouldn't be having sex with students. They know that, and when they are caught in the behavior, deserve the punishment for the transgression.

"With all of the school shootings going around, this woman should be commended for helping relieve a student's pent up frustrations... all over her face."

    hee hee :D

  • jchez

Shouldn't the father of a 16 year old boy be looking for a safe and easy way to introduce his son to sex? Instead of being thankful for the opportunity to further teach his son about how to behave decently after this experience, the father turned in the teacher.

I'm glad stauatory rape never existed way back when people only lived about 20 or so years. We would have never survived as a species. Although I believe CHILDREN should be protected, this was a 16 year old male who knew EXACTLY what he was getting himself into... his teacher. And as for the teacher, give her a break. With all of the school shootings going around, this woman should be commended for helping relieve a student's pent up frustrations... all over her face. OK, I'm done.

  • Gothamist_Cynic

I still don't understand how consensual is considered rape.

  • dimshine

this kid is a hero now to his entire class. think of the reunion:

'hey weren't you the kid who did his teacher?'

    'yeah that's right.'

'what are you up to these days.'

'nothing. i pretty much peaked then, getting laid at 16 cures you of ambition for a good 20 years. guess i'll go play lotto.'

    'try the punch.'

  • msk

At least this one isn't married with kids, so that's, um, progress?

  • holyfrjole

Apparently there's not enough real crime in Nassau County so they have to go after a well-liked teacher who gave a male student a little extracurricular education. BFD. $35K bail? Ridiculous. If she has punched the kid she would have gotten ROR'd, but have sex with him and it'll cost ya.

  • palestine

She's willing to do anything with the students."

    Cue rimshot.

    Heyooooo.

  • zodak

this kid's dad sucks!! what kind of man reports something like this? what a loser.

  • Jen Chung

I'm still amazed how the student called his dad from the teacher's phone. While these are just accusations against Kennedy now, I imagine that a record of a phone call from Kennedy's phone to the victim's dad's phone in the wee hours could be decent evidence of odd behavior.

  • Polite New Yorker

Who are these complete losers who rat out the female teachers who have had sex with them? A male teacher having sex with a female student - he deserves to go to jail for a long time, but female high school teachers should be allowed to have sex with students, so long as those students are not in their class. Where were these teachers when I was in high school?

  • bxbrian

man why didn't this happen in my school when i was there??? craziness.

i actually know of a fellow alum that had a relationship with one of our art teachers. she got fired, so after graduation they moved away upstate to an art colony together.

he now works at the hardware store in town. guess it didn't work out.

  • everydaydreamer

Not surprising. Consider a teacher who probably has to commute 1.5 hours a day to get to work or live in a mainly suburban community with no appreciable social outlets for singles, works long hours, and doesn't get much attention from decent men because she's not hot. Add to that, opportunity and lack of judgment...yeah, a potent stew. She's innocent until proven guilty and a man in a similar situation would be crucified, but I can understand. I've seen the lifestyle that many younger, single NYC teachers live and it can be socially isolating if they don't have a groups like Teach for America or some other training program that gives them a social network. On top of it, nobody really does psych profiling of these teachers. I've dated a few and have seen some interesting personalities, to say the least. Then again, I've known a few women who worked at high-end private schools but were serious coke fiends. People act surprised only because they fail to see what's obvious.

  • babyhitler

how come east coast teachers are ugly as hell but the west coast teachers are super hot?

  • Rocknrope

"She's willing to do anything with the students."
