Last night, a three-alarm fire broke out on the 3rd floor of a 26-story building at 460 Grand Street. Firefighters issued a mayday call "firefighters became confused and disoriented in the heavy smoke and complex layout" of the apartment where the fire may have started.
One resident said her apartment filled with smoke within 5-10 minutes, and the smoke filled the building up to the 26th floor. Two residents trying to escape by elevator were injured when the elevator doors opened onto the floor where the fire was. The pair have life-threatening injuries.
A third seriously hurt person is expected to survive and thirty firefighters were among the injured. One resident looked on the bright side, telling WABC 7, "My family is fine. That's my main concern. I don't care about the building. Just care about my family.''
Here are fire safety tips from the FDNY, which recommends you develop an escape plan. Additionally, the FDNY says you should not take the elevator.

"Two residents morons trying to escape by elevator"
30 firefighters were injured? that seems like a lot
Funny build things to live in have the local population priced out and expect things not to go worng........paid close to a cool Mil or over 2000 a month in rent?....hope ya got free marsh mellows..... cause with housing prices dropping like arse cancer, many more fires like those arcoss the US will sweep across NYC and scare most of those new nyers (out o towners) like it was the 70s.
That is what happens when a Rich Closeted Jew from Boston run NYC, billions means you sell out NYC like a Equity firm, sell off your reasources to friends so they cn make money while your lying to the masses....bloomy is an enviormental when he astro turfs East river park with something that will give you cancer...get the
F&%K outta here!
SUCKAZ!
Burn all u mofos that helped Bloomy and Guiliani get elected....your City is gone enjoy the Starbucks b4 they go outta business because in this climate, those places that took out the moms & pops....how many more stores can you open in a place where you pay rent or get homeless..
Westinghouse Boxes are where you meet the most interesting people!
Foodies....how much longer you think you can keep your job and get that oh so expensive dessert......Most resturants with a average of
%50 capacity will be going out of business, somes are going 2 want some money out o' it....hope they pay the right guys bcause a joker could kill a lot o people without the right fire progression methods....but you can find those on craigslist...hope they can afford the computer.
Remember, back the last times NY houses prices dropped more then 15% & dragstic rises in the cost of living, many will torch their to get the insurence...
Gotta hope some dude on the lower floor isn't losing it by losing his job and cant make the payment.........penniless or cash out via the match.......U tell me how is all those other times different from now?
Renters have other issues but rarely do they burn down their own stufff to get the apartment insurence...... Hows that CO-OP that used to be a rent stablized building...feeling safer?
BURN!
just the truth ruth! 3 exits @ all times!
DWM, if you want to rant like a madman, that's fine. I would, however, appreciate it if you learned to spell and to use proper grammmar.
"30 firefighters were injured? that seems like a lot."
I have cousins who are firefighters. They have to report EVERY bruise and laceration, no matter how small or insignificant. That's how you can get 30 firefighers injured. Two may have broken legs and the other 28 suffered nicks or the equivalent of minor sunburn. If they don't report these injuries and then something major happens later due to them, they are SOL with the insurance companies.
By the way TK, awesome avatar! Long live the Dead Milkmen.
DWM obviously has no grasp on reality, so it's probably too much to ask him to embrace spelling or grammar.
DWM is also calling our rotten Mayor a "Jew" that
should tell you where this drughead? is coming from.
Keeping blaming others for your own faults you
jerk.Your on the way to becoming a murderer JMO.
Yah! I know "Keep blaming others for your own
faults you jerk".
WSM
HBDC - thx for the info and the compliment
Wow,
roasty toasty........love this stuff.
Called a spade a spade.....now where am I coming from? Proper english is not used in this country nor is is used on this blog. As with most things, this native american's first language is native too soo if I dont have the proper level of desired grammar......get off my land!
Guess you could totally subdue my use of "ebonics" or my play on spelling with an arguement that addresses the rise in fires in & around NYC, but ya didn't.....
AS for the Mayor....many have no love for any "religious" politicans.....my lips dont go there......many have faith, but most do not use it to pander to people of faith to gain power....so take your anti-semetic race baiting elsewhere.
OH by the Way, ever put down a high rise fire with high number of subject recoveries?? Then how does anyone know that 30 is a high number of wounded, thats 420, or in the cases of 9-11, thousands wonded and hundreds dead.....
in other words....do not get burned....
Mad props to Rescue 5, & Engine 160......if you dont know why Find the F%#k out!
holy crap. is today a school holiday?
where are all the grammar nazis when someone like DWM2008 mashes his keyboard with his fists? come on grooverider, correct his comment.
(2nd try)
"Two residents morons trying to escape by elevator"
DWM2008, it's actually very difficult to comprehend the points you're trying to make. there's a difference between typos and an utter lack of sense.
anyway, isn't DO NOT USE ELEVATORS IN CASE OF FIRE the most basic rule?
finally - something fun to read. the thought of someone on the 3rd floor tweaking out and torching the joint for $$ in a high rise will stick with me for a while. i also just now learned that staten took almost 25% of 9-11 FD hits. sawrite.
Amazing how they used an elevator during a fire. Some people never learn. Talk about being an idiot and stupid.
DWM is my hero, bad copy and all.
for the intellectually retarded....
1. Fire is a recession's best friend. Such Insurence is required & a review of historical trends will show when the price of real estate falls, homes burn.
2. NYC is in critical condition & most is the fault of ignorant people (like those that cant piece together logic)
3. FDNY is not the NYPD, they do their jobs, take Huge risk for injuries in a high rise fire. 30 is a relatively small number.
4. Bloomberg is a zealot looking out for his rich friends in all his policies. Might want to check the fire inspection records as the fire spread way too quicky for a properly maintained building.
5. Most people address other peoples points of view without cause bcause of the need for attention, I just respond bcause I luv da dbate!
6. As we pay for my computer, ISP, tax surcharges and edumakation...we fit the bill. Having the resources to have the freedom to voice a valid point supported by fact..(unless of course your at work stealing time from your employer).
Either "ebonics" or"logic" these points have foundation in fact, mo people like me, 9-11 and the coming recession does happen.
When people cant read between the lines like bradah adamada....well..
enjoy congestion pricing making you cough up your wallets and your lungs.. Suckaz
This isn't the Blue condo. It's federally subsidized affordable housing. I believe it's still owned by a non-profit that was originally organized by the Episcopal Church:
http://www.downtownexpress.com/de_81/grandstguildtenants.html
I don't think anybody is torching their apartment there for the insurance money.
So the fire inspections wasvertified when? By Whom and Y did the fire spread so quickly, that builing is the mist of deregulation.....wow the polt thickens......dig deeper the the stink is gonna rip!
I have never commented on here, but I couldn't sit by and watch ignorance take root.
I have no problem making fun of people like taking elevators in fires. Thats just asking for a joke.
But to claim that the building is a bunch of rich people is absolutely wrong.
I was walking by there last night, as I often due heading home from work. All around the building were the residents staring in disbelief at the 12 firetrucks and emergency buses outside their apartment. A woman was sitting on the sidewalk trying to comfort her small son.
And here's the ringer:
They were all poor dominicans and hispanics.
This is a subsidized house, where people don't even have the luxury to sit on their laptop and make posts about how bad the city is. Even further, there are no starbucks in that area, DMZ. Its probably the least gentrified area in manhattan except for the avenue d housing.
So next time you try and pretend that you know what your talking about, just stick to ironic one liners or stating the obvious, like not taking elevators in fires; or the other obvious thing: most people like DMZ have no idea what they'r talking about. (and yes, that was a semi-colon DMZ, look it up. Its a "grammatical thang"...I luv da gramma, son)Oh yeah, and......Suckaz!
The 2 people using the elevator were an elderly couple that barely spoke English; they were disoriented from the smoke. One of them has since passed away. How about some empathy for the family of this couple instead of rush judgment's.
The fire was an electrical fire started due to too many electrical devices plugged into one outlet. No conspiracy, no fraud...
DWM2008 - You are BEYOND ignorant. Even when you try to not type in your "ebonics," you still use improper grammar. You should keep your idiotic rants to yourself and stop spreading lies.
The fire was in one apartment only. It was the smoke that spread to the whole building, not the flames.
I have friends who lived in that building who are now displaced. Unlike you who obviously doesn't have a job, because you can sit on the internet all day spouting out idiocracies, they work! You want to see changes made to the way things work in the world? Then get up off your ass and do something instead of "telling it like it is" all day on the internet. Are you on a break from playing solitaire? The only way to enforce change is to go out and do it for yourself. So get involved in something productive instead of adding to the already astronomical amounts of ignorance in this country.
