Map of the Day: NYC's First Water Trail Map & Guide

032708watertrailmap.jpgCommuting by canoe gets a little easier today as the Parks Department launches the NYC Water Trail Map & Guide. The Parks website features the first interactive map of the citywide water trail system, with detailed information about 28 locations where you can launch a kayak, canoe or retro submarine.

Volunteers from various kayak/canoe clubs helped the Parks Department gather information about launch and landing areas throughout New York; the map has detailed info – which will be continually updated – with directions to each site, nearby amenities, where to paddle, and other tips.

The print version was released this morning when Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe officially announced the water trail guide at the Valentino Pier in Red Hook. Joining him were Going Coastal's Barbara La Rocca, Hudson River Valley Greenway's Scott Keller and members of the canoe and kayak community.

I think this is a great thing, perhaps it brings more people to try kayak

A special thanks to all those water and sewer bill payers who coughed up the billions required to clean up the harbor.

Thanks most of all to the Harlem community, who accepted the Riverbank Sewage Treatment Plant on their waterfront, so that the Hudson could be made swimmable and maybe even fishable again. They got the Riverbank State Park in exchange, but still pay the price in terms of odors on hot summer days.

Thank you Harlem. We owe you!
