Jeter and Abreu could have headed Matsui off at the pass by getting married to each other. But to make it official, they would have had to do it in Boston and that would have resulted in a most uncivil union. The Rivalry cost them $25k. That's how serious Baseball gets.

so this is the part where jeter tells matsui's bride to be that it was all a bet and so she calls the whole thing off. matsui then has to try to explain to her that while it started as a bet, he afterwards realized he really loves her, but she won't believe him and he has to do something crazy to prove his love and win her back. hilarity may or may not ensue.
