S.I. Woman Indicted in Husband's Murder

2008_03_nmercer.jpgA grand jury voted to indict Janet Redmond-Mercereau for the December murder of her husband. The Staten Island Advance says after keeping the police waiting for a few hours, she was accompanied by her lawyer when she turned herself in.

Douglas Mercereau was a well-liked fire marshal who lived with his wife and daughters in the Oakwoodhome he grew up in. On December 4, Redmond-Mercereau, a high school teacher, had called 911 to report her husband was shot dead in their home. Prosecutors contend that she shot her husband, then took a shower and did loads of laundry with the bloody clothes. The couple had previously started divorce proceedings but stopped them to reconcile.

Mercerau's service revolver was found "clean of prints" near his body - prosecutors say she put it in the dishwasher. Apparently female DNA was found on the magazine clips, but it cannot be conclusively tied to Redmond-Mercereau, who also had dried blood under her fingernails.

The two daughters were temporarily placed into the custody of a neighbor. Mercereau's family issued a statement saying "We have patiently waited while the NYPD accumulated their evidence and completed their tests. In our hearts, we hope that a fair and just verdict is delivered swiftly, though we know that this too requires patience."

handgun handles are made to resist fingerprints. i learned that as a juror last year.

she should have just sat on him.

edEx - that's interesting. Also, the thing about Redmond-Mercereau putting the gun through the dishwasher - I'd imagine there's forensic evidence to make such a claim and the act of putting a gun in the dishwasher seems pretty... strange.

I smell another Mary Winkler case in the making.

What's the over/under on her getting less than 3 years on voluntary manslaughter?

She can claim that she was abused and all, but her generla behavior sounds as if she's an absolute psycho.

while edEx is right, it isn't for any criminal reasons.

The most important part of shooting is a firm grip on the weapon. Most pistol grips are serrated or stippled or otherwise 3D textured to ensure that a positive grip can be made on the weapon. An unintentional side-effect is that these textures, with their high and low points, disrupt the complicated fingerprint patterns that may be left on there.

If gun manufacturers wanted to make their guns "fingerprint-proof", they would make sure that the entire gun is covered in a disruptive pattern. Even if teflon-coated fingerprints would still appear until wiped off.

How to say this without coming off as a real jerk ... er ... um ... isn't this the lday who claimed that her husband was being mean to her and calling her fat? If so, 3 years manslaughter max. Though personally it makes my brain hurt someone will sympathise with her and he's not here to defend himself.

"My husband thinks I'm fat. What are my options?

1. Divorce him.

2. Stop being fat.

3. Kill him.

Hmmm. Tough choice. I'll go with #3. Yeah, that sounds best."
