THEATER: A sordid family history of adultery and venereal disease comes back to haunt the fragile son of a dead aristocrat in Henrik Ibsen’s sensational melodrama Ghosts. The play was scandalous at the time of its premiere in 1882 because of its scathing depiction of Victorian society's hypocrisies. According to Martin Denton, a new production by the reliable Pearl Theatre Company is “precisely what you hope an evening of ‘classic’ theatre will be: a riveting, involving drama, beautifully performed and presented, that feels timely and resonant, emotionally and politically.” – John Del Signore

MUSIC: When the Mountain Goats played the Knitting Factory a few years ago, John Darnielle swore to the crowd that he would play that venue every time the band returned to New York, no matter how big they got. Well, they hit up Bowery Ballroom last time around, and tonight their at the ginormous Webster Hall. Tickets are still on sale, for those who don't mind the larger venue.
