NJ Youths Sentenced in Cemetery Desecration

2008_03_cemevanda.jpgAfter toppling 499 headstones in January, four teenagers were sentenced today in Middlesex County, NJ. The Star-Ledger reports the judge gave the teens, ages 15-17, 18 months probation, plus paying some of the damages, writing letters of apology, serving 100 hours of "community service keeping community cemeteries clean" and attending "a 12-week course studying the Holocaust."

Three of the teens struck on New Year's day, toppling 17 headstones, and then came back a few days later and toppled more. Investigators determined that their motive was not anti-Semitism but plain old "alcohol-fueled" boredom that spurred their 4-hour spree overturning headstones, some of which weighed over a ton.

Congregation Poile Zedek in New Brunswick estimates it will cost $200,000 to repair the headstones, and one of the defendants was ordered to pay $5,000 in damages while the three others were told to pay $2,500. And apparently the parents of two of the boys offered to help repair the headstones - it's unclear if their sons made the same offer.

Who's gonna be first to say something antisemitic? Maybe about the whole Bear-Sterns thing, or Eliot Spitzer, or maybe even about the 51st crane collapse? Are we blaming that on the Jews yet?

Slap on the wrist for 6-figures worth of damage.

The parents should be held responsible for the monetary damages. Their spawn should have received a more severe sentence. Jail time would not have been out of place. These teenagers came back a second time. They must have enjoyed doing what they did. They must learn that their actions have consequences.

I think the parents are also responsible and should have to pay for the actions of their children. I wouldn't be surprised if the attitude of the children was learned from their parents. Certainly, their parents did not teach them proper behavior. If they, the parents, are held financially responsible, it's just possible that they may learn to control their children.

As things stand, the only thing they will learn is that they can get away with this.

The children and their parents should pay all of the damages, but that can be settled in civil court.

Yes, it was just a slap on the wrist. It was poor justice. It failed to adequately punish the criminals and it will fail to deter similar actions in the future.

it's not hurting anybody. Dead people don't give a fuck. They are just fossil fuels now.

May a large tombstone fall over and crush your sorry face babyhitter. I would have said brains, but seeing you have none there are none to be crushed.

The teens and their parents should have to pay for ALL the damages. There are only paying 6% of the damages!?

The drunken idiots who did this, should be held accountable for 100% of the damages. 15 is old enough to know, that its illegal to drink, get drunk in public, and to vandalize a cemetary. Doesn't matter if their parents are scum of the earth or best people on earth, these jerks are old enough to know right from wrong, and pay the consequences when they get caught.

May attempted burglars rape your entire family in front of you while you watch in despair snoopy. Also, I hope the rapists make you rape your parents too.

Oh wow, the trolls are feeding each other.

I could see one or two or 25 headstones, but 499??!!! That seems like more than a bit of 'alcohol-fueled boredom'. Why are they not being held financially responsibile??

It shouldn't be Snoopy that should be cursed, but "babyhitler" (notice that usernames are above the reply, not below). His alias shows where he stands, and obviously when he goes into the ground (in any manner), it should be enjoyable that some teens urine or do a 'dump' on his remains, since he doesn't care as he's said (to put it kindly).

And 499? Really, two nights of continuous boredom like that? I hope the amount is cleaning the cemetery several times over, since it wouldn't cover the cost of damages if there are that many ruined. They aren't even paying 10% of the damages.
