Bronx Hit-and-Run: 91-Year-Old's Legs Severed

2008_03_bxhr.jpgA 91-year-old woman crossing East Gun Hill Road at DeKalb yesterday morning was hit by a tractor-trailer. Anna Rogovin had been walking to the senior center when she was hit and her legs crushed. It is also possible that a second vehicle hit her.

Rogovin was comforted by witnesses; one said another woman held her until the ambulance came, "She had [Rogovin's] head in her lap. Her legs were smashed...Everybody was screaming and crying in the street." Some said that the truck did have the green light; one neighbor who had helped Rogovin, who walks with a cane, cross the street before, told the Post, "She'd walk very, very slow. By the time we'd get to the other side, the light would have changed."

Rogovin is in critical condition at St. Barnabas Hospital. Police believe it was an accident but are still looking for the truck driver. A neighbor seethed to the Daily News, "The truck did not stop. It kept going. How would he feel if it was his mom? He just hit her and kept going."

Hit and run drivers are TRASH, plain and simple.

Oh no! I hope she makes it out alive and that they find the SOB who did this.

Old people shouldn't be allowed to walk across busy streets, just like little kids. I've seen senior citizen relatives that hold up traffic for 5-20 seconds after the light is green because of slow walking speed. Get a scooter at that rate, your asking to be killed.

Yes, life is difficult for you, isn't it?

So a guy on a bicycle drops a firecracker at the Times Square army recruitment office, which shatters some glass in the middle of the night, and the Mayor and his cronies are all over the news the next day, fuminating and vowing to find the "criminal". (Subsequently the city and the news media have dutifully forgotten this story).

Meanwhile last week, two pedstrians were struck and killed by trucks in midtown on the same night, and then, this hit-and-run maiming yesterday. Where's the grandstanding now from our public officials?

Oh, of course, the TV cameras are nowhere to be found, and neither are our elected officials.

Bombs make people FREAK out.

Yes, whereas hit and run drivers actually make people DIE. Our priorities are fucked up.

they'll get the guy, it was one of the clearest surveillance photos I've ever seen.
Oh, if I heard the news report correctly, the tractor trailer lurched forward while she was crossing. now if this meant he didn't see her when the light changed, I don't know. Mechanical failure, I don't know.
but that's one of fears when crossing in front of a tractor trailer.

drewo: an excellent point. It seems that hit and runs (whether of pedestrians or cyclists) just aren't sexy enough for the media.

Hey Pete, fuck you. You think you'll never get old?

That wasn't my fault. I kept getting an error message.
