Parades are generally times when politicians come out to march with and wave to constituents. (At last year's Gay Pride Parade, City Council Speaker Quinn and Senator Clinton marched, and Mayor Bloomberg, Governor Spitzer, and Senator Schumer were at the Puerto Rican Day Parade.) But Monday's St. Patrick's Day Parade may have few politicians, because Lieutenant Governor David Paterson is being sworn in that day, too.
The Staten Island Advance points out the swearing-in is creating notable absences from the parade, since Mayor Bloomberg will definitely be in Albany. One would imagine that Senators Clinton and Schumer will also be upstate, as will City Comptroller William Thompson. And Quinn will be upstate, but she doesn't march in the parade because of the organizers' stance on the LGBT community in the parade (they're not allowed).
City Councilman Michael McMahon of Staten Island said, "I think under normal circumstances one could expect more consideration for the importance of the St. Patrick's day parade in New York City, which is a high point in the Irish Catholic calendar. However these are extremely unusual circumstances and times in which we find ourselves so I think we have to be a little forgiving." If there's anyone to forgive, people need to forgive, it's Governor Spitzer!
It's unclear whether Police Commissioner Ray Kelly (who is Irish!) will be at the parade. He is a oft-rumored Republican candidate for Mayor in 2009, so it's a sign he's a power player. If he doesn't, he might be one of the higher ranking city officials in the parade.

Is that an Italian flag that Bloomberg is holding?
"Fewer" politicians. "Fewer". Please. Edit, fer cryin' out loud!
FEWER FEWER FEWER FEWER FEWER
That is the Mick flag Snoopy. You blind or a soonad or something? That is orange not red like on the best flag in the world other than the flag of America. You know America was named after an Italian? St. Patrick was an Italian, not a Mick.
Italians don't get all fuori come un balcone. That is drunk to you mamalukes who aren't lucky to be Italian.
The transition of power on St. Patrick's Day seems like a calculated move by Spitzer, perhaps as a final slap in the face to a lot of politicians who would have otherwise marched in the parade.
Snoopy, that appears to be the flag of the Republic of Ireland. The flags are basically identical, except for the one stripe. It could be your monitor if it looks too red.
And Goomba, "Mick" is a loaded and bigoted synonym for Irish. It would be like someone calling an Italian a "Wop" which rates about the same on the derogatory ethnic name scale.
Swearing him on St. Patrick's Day. No respect for the Irish.
I'm sure our beloved Ancient Order of Hibernians will feel that way, and will promptly turn to the next barstool to the left and enlist Bill Donohue and his Catholic League b'hoys in ratcheting up the "This is anti-Catholic bigotry as well as anti-Irish" rhetoric.
I agree with Pete Hamill... this parade is so over.
Time to go to Mcsorelys and drink 12 darks
