Last Night's Action: Devils Can't Finish

  • Canadiens 4, Devils 0: With a chance to solidify their hold on the top spot in the Eastern Conference, the Devils instead surrendered it in a disappointing loss in the province of Quebec. New Jersey outshot Montreal 33-18 in the first two periods, but when it came time to trudge back to the dressing room for the second intermission, the Devils trailed 3-0.

Give credit to Montreal goalie Carey Price. Martin Brodeur has now started 28 straight games. He may be indomitable, but he wasn't impregnable Tuesday. The Devils now trail Montreal by one point in the Eastern Conference standings.

  • Lightning 8, Islanders 4: The smoke from the fire that has been the Islanders has all but dissipated. This latest disaster -- the fifth in six games -- saw the Islanders allow eight goals to the worst team in the conference. Bill Guerin, Ruslan Fedotenko, Ben Walter and Mike Comrie scored for New York.
