The Vatican has just issued a list of seven new "social" sins. As Bloomberg News reports, Bishop Gianfranco Girotti explained, "You offend God not only by stealing, taking the Lord's name in vain or coveting your neighbor's wife, but also by wrecking the environment, carrying out morally debatable experiments that manipulate DNA or harm embryos." Here they are:
1. "Bioethical" violations such as birth controlSo, was this list drawn up in anticipation of Pope Benedict XVI's April trip to the United States?
2. "Morally dubious'' experiments such as stem cell research
3. Drug abuse
4. Polluting the environment
5. Contributing to widening divide between rich and poor
6. Excessive wealth
7. Creating poverty
And here are the original ("old skool") sins, from Pope Gregory I: Pride, Envy, Gluttony, Lust, Anger, Greed and Sloth.

So, how's the Catholic Church going to capitalize on these new sins?
Wow, Pope Benedict XVI looks more and more like the Emperor from Star Wars every day.
May I suggest not raping children who see you as their holy God's representative on Earth?
May I suggest not raping children who see you as their holy God's representative on Earth?
I think numbers 4-7 are a direct attack on the Bush regime.
Shouldn't it be Wrath and not Anger?
Spitzer prostitution ring!? What's the scoop Gothamist?
So it's now Mortal Sins, Venal Sins, and Completely Redundant Media-Whoring Sins? I can't wait for the next Choose-a-Pope Reality Show.
Gov. Eliot Spitzer has told senior advisers that he had been involved in a prostitution ring, the New York Times reported Monday.
I'm officially done with the Catholic Church.
How is stem cell research "Morally dubious''? The church is anti-science. We're going back to Dark Ages.
Does drug abuse include alcohol too? Because alcohol is a drug.
"Bioethical" violations? WTF?! People use your condoms!
Conforming to #1 means you're contributing to #4, #5, #7.
I think numbers 4-7 are a direct attack on the Bush regime.
Yeah, because there were no problems with income inequality or poverty prior to 2001. And these problems certainly don't exist in any other countries.
I would add "blogging" and "djing" to that list
I would add "blogging" and "djing" to that list
How exactly do they define drug ABUSE? I need to know because if they're actually right about all this fire and brimstone heaven and hell shit then I might be in trouble.
Naaahhhhhh.....that's silly.
I think #1 might be in conflict with #5 and #7.
isn't the vatican guilty of #6?
isn't the vatican guilty of #6? sure seems like that to me. Maybe the sins only apply to individuals, not organizations? After all, it seems unlikely that an organization is going to heaven.
This makes us glad we are an Episcopalian.
And it would seem that the RCs are guilty of them all on both the old and new list.
Could the Vatican possibly be more irrelevant? No one cares.
Considering the hundreds of millions the Catholic Church has paid out to the thousands of people raped by priests, I think they are guily of #6 too.
Grasping at straws. Sorry, Catholics; it looks like your institution is struggling to preserve a semblance of relevance in our society.
"3. Drug abuse"
Note that this does not prohibit the recreational use of drugs, only that you shouldn't abuse them.
Its not a sin to hit the slopes as long as you pace yourself. Thanks Vatican for clearing that up!
Im pretty sure that god would be pretty pissed that an ex Nazi is adding his 2 cents about sins.
I'm just saying...genocide?
Without having spoken to god myself, I think he'd agree that that is pretty sinful.
#9. Selling people a load of bullshit, fantasy, dogma, mythology, and profiting from it.
The church is also guilty of #5, by continuing to create ignorant humans through their works.
Catholics really aren't into "interpretation" anymore are they? Everything so LITERAL. I always thought anything could be covered by the original 7 deadly sins.
Stemcell research: Pride "Screw you god I'm gonna just Keep on livin' 'cause I'm so damn smart! Look how smart I am!! I pull apart your creation, reverse engineer it and make it last longer! Oh I am proud of myself"
Excessive Wealth: Greed
Creating Poverty: Greed
Drug abuse: sloth
and so on.
As others have pointed out: Hello Pot, er I mean Pope, kettle #6 is calling...
My only fear is that this ridiculous old religion will be supplanted by an even more ridiculous modern one.
You all are going to Hell for dissing the Pope!
You all are going to Hell for dissing the Pope!
Darth Sidious?
What an absolutely pathetic Gothamist entry. This has nothing to do with New York and is horribly edited. Gothamist needs to hire an editor.
Oh Goomba!
I don't know about anyone else but I was going to hell for at least 7 of the *original* 7 deadly sins (I'm old skool like that)
Making fun of the Pope is like brushing my teeth. I do it at least twice a day every day. This just makes it easier, like a Sonicare.
Look, like most of you out there, I've dreamt about giving the Pope a dirty boy spanking over my knees with a cricket bat. Don't deny it. Up with man skirt and keep the mitre on you head, Benny.
But seriously. What's up the Holy See? What erosion of seriousness. The lack of gravitas. Where's the fire and brimstone? This is incense and patchouli. Have they been watching too much Simpsons? The 7 so-so sins of Mr Burns?
Humdrum unworthy of his Nazi past.
I'd be glad to commit 1 or 6 so that I can be excommunicated. I was baptized against my will so let's make it even.
Another prespective on this.

#10 we just did, with the new interpretation of these "mortal" sins for the modern world. The last time the 7 deadly sins were reviewed/created was in the 1500's.
Congrats goes out to the Catholic Church for making up more sins to make more people feel guilty. Maybe that will increase their attendence.
Guys, if you'll read that article I linked to, you'll see the little "list" of "new sins" mentioned here was actually not some formulation put out by the Vatican, at all.
It was formulated (read: "created") by a British newspaper from paraphrasing a translation of an interview given to an Italian newspaper by a Vatican official. (Wow, if that wasn't convoluted to type out... >>)
And the official, Archbishop Girotti, wasn't even talking about "new" sins. He was speaking about the dropping numbers of catholics who go to the sacrament of Confession. And during the interview he mentioned problems in the modern age, like the increased use of birth control which is a sin and increasing poverty. What he said wasn't new nor was it meant to be.
What Mattalexto said back in reply 25 was correct. Those "sins" the media came up with out of the interview do correspond to the seven deadlies.
The point is, there was no attempt to put out some new formulation of new sins. That was a trumped up thing the english-speaking newspapers did, while ignoring the real point of the interview.
I mean seriously, what person who follows catholicism at all doesn't already know the church considers birth control to be immoral? Its not new and the archbishop wasn't putting forth some new list. The media did to gain some buzz.
And congrats cus all you who believed it just got suckered.
(This article we are all commenting on is particularly cutesy because it never actually says this list was actually drawn up by the vatican or any kind of official source. Read carefully.
It says "So, was this list drawn up in anticipation of Pope Benedict XVI's April trip to the United States?"
See? Leaves it a question and never answers it. Just implies it cutely.
And what they are implying is incorrect because the answer is "No. It wasn't." As proved by the real story reported in that link I provided and other articles to be found that actually provide provable facts to back up their story.)

No. No, it didn't. As proved by the real story reported in that link I provided and other articles to be found that actually provide provable facts to back up their story.)
Sorry for the triple posting. Um, yeah server problems, apparently. (*smacks gothamist's internal servers*)
Just wanted to say those two posts I wrote are actually different at the ends. The bit in parenthesis? I changed it and the one in the second post is the one I mean and is factually correct.
Sorry for any confusion. :/
