If I was on that original "slut" list-despite the ridiculous inaccuracy of its contents- can I consider myself somewhat of a campus celebrity?

Bizarre. When I heard of Juicy Campus I thought it might be an on-line analogy to the old Lingua Franca magazine, a kind of clearing-house for actual academic rumors. It appears to be just a kind of virtual bathroom wall, of no more interest than real bathroom walls.

If they want to sleep with one man or 1,000 men it's their right to do as they please. I'm tired of hearing the hostilities of today’s youth especially regarding gender issues. The double standards are so ingrained in this puritanical society. With leaders like Governor Spitzer and former President Bill Clinton the "War Against Women" has been waged and it isn't hard to figure out where this hate is coming from.
These "macho" men are violating should be expelled for crossing boundaries and slandering reputations. This isn't a "freedom of speech" issue, this is harassment or the most despicable kind.

Oh, man, the grammar on the posted page is sooooo bad! If it was a Columbia student who wrote this nonsense, the school should be ashamed to have admitted someone who doesn't know how to use apostrophes in "don't" and "she's". Ignorant fool.

and THIS is how some of those future leaders fill their current spare time, by trashing women?
Hmmm...anyone see any future Eliot Spitzers graduating this year from Columbia?

I hope you're not trying to imply that all of the posters are male without actually knowing it for fact.

Ok, every dickhead has the right under law to post crap like this. Anyone who can prove slander or libel has the right to sue. EVERYONE has the right to read it, and dislike it, to say so. And parents interested in getting a first rate education for thier darlings, are free to take their money somewhere else.
Just one thing...Columbia is supposed to be one of the big time cradles of future leaders of industry, law, finance, politics, diplmacy, the sciences, the arts...and THIS is how some of those future leaders fill their current spare time, by trashing women?
Hmmm...anyone see any future Eliot Spitzers graduating this year from Columbia?

Yes Dr Zippy.I actually *was* making a point. Diamond actually *does* speak for the University's student body as the President of the student council.
I agreed that they had the right to have him speak and I also believe that as idiotic as these websites are, its still free speech.
Bravo to the students for resisting.
The smarter thing to do would be to publicly ostracize these 'tards so they *never* get laid.

Being a student at the university, the move to block the website has met a lot of popular resistance and there is no way that the site will be blocked. Even if it were blocked, as Dr. Zippy alludes to, numerous mirror sites would be established and there would be no way to block all of them.

It is important to note that anyone can post on this site, so while I'm sure a lot of the drivel comes from Columbia students themselves, I'm also sure that there are posts written by outsiders who simply want to stir the shit. There is also word that the site itself deletes comments that are not inflammatory to make it "juicier."

Blocking this site would leave the university open to a lawsuit that it would lose because, at the end of the day, no matter how vitriolic or idiotic the posts, it is free speech. There is a line that could be crossed (threats, etc.), but it would take a lot to get there.

The publicity around this site has, in my opinion, been highly counterproductive as students who had never heard of the site or viewed it now go on to see what all the fuss is about. The best way to kill the site is to ignore it. Less traffic = less advertising revenue = no ability of upkeep. This, obviously, does the exact opposite.

I'm a junior at Columbia- Michelle Diamond is NOT speaking for the Columbia student body on this issue. Almost everyone thinks this is completely ridiculous, and the only people who want to ban the site are the couple of girls getting trashed on it.

Yes it is the same university. Diamond, however, does not speak for the university and she has apparently not learned much about the first amendment while a student there. Was there a point you were trying to make?

also...this is the same Columbia University that invited Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to come speak at their campus, citing free speech, isn't it?

Block the site? What kind of Gestapo crap is that? I'm sure the university is well within its rights to do such a thing but the idea seems to run counter to what universities typically purport to stand for.

"Yay free speech is great! Unless we don't like what you do with it."
