Following two incidents in recent years that highlighted the occasionally raucous atmospheres of City firehouses, the FDNY is cracking down on what it considers improper names for certain houses, like the Happy Hookers in Red Hook, Southern Comfort on Staten Island, Animal House in the Bronx, and The Nut House in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
The names and logos of these firehouses came under scrutiny following an incident on New Year's Eve 2003, when an argument over Elvis Presley's birthday at the Southern Comfort house resulted in a brawl with one firefighter getting struck in the face with a metal chair. In 2004, several firefighters at the Animal House in the Bronx were accused of having sex with a woman in the house and trying to cover it up.
In the wake of those incidents, the FDNY now tightly regulates the size of house patches and the logos that can go on them. These restrictions also extend to the logos that are frequently featured on the doors of firehouses. Inside the firehouse as well, the atmosphere has become more regulated. Firefighters were told to remove all images and articles adorning their lockers excepted for their name plaques. This prohibition extended to stickers of the American flag.
While most houses are going along with the new rules (Southern Comfort is now the South Shore Pride), some houses like Engine 279 in Red Hook are passively resisting any calls for a change. It retains its Happy Hooker emblem on the outside of its firehouse, although the FDNY says that it will be repainting that front door.

Scoppetta and Bloomberg will probably dispatch a crew in the dead of night to repaint this door. They'll probably hire their lackeys to call in a false alarm and repaint it while the company is out.
The mayor and the rest of his bureaucratic enclave are disgraces.
Kill all politicians.
why is it because of a few (retards, handicapped, pirates, criminals) the majority have to suffer?

Oh, please. What's wrong with the Happy Hookers? It's clever. Who's offended? Sad Hookers?
we've become a nation of complainers
Let them have whatever crazy and/or potentially offensive name they want, as it helps them blow off some steam from their job of running into burning buildings to save people for absurdly low sums of money.
And one of these day's we'll get ourself a Happy Hookers t shirt when we luck out and have the t shirt guy at E279 L131 when we go by.
It's a good things that cops don't drink. Can you just imagine?

Neither do firemen.
Random raids for EEO violations such as having a Men's Health magazine at the firehouse. If they find even AN EMPTY BOTTLE OF MARSALA COOKING WINE, the whole company is interrogated and officers and members are brought up on charges. It's happened.
Random drug screens at quarters while the company is in service. A testing unit shows up unannounced for a urine sample.
wa wa waaaa
I can remember a few years back there was a house in the South Bronx that was called La Casa Caca and everyone got all up in arms because they thought that the firemen were commenting on the nabe. Maybe they were, or maybe they were just commenting on the fact that they couldn't keep the firehouse clean (which apparently was true), but there's a case where the neighbors complained and had a right to be listened to. But now I wonder if that helped start this trend.
IMHO... What's happened here is we've lost all perspective. As #1 and #2 above said, it seems that one of the priorities of this current administration is to eradicate all bad behavior from the citizens and employees of the city (to make the tourists and developers feel better?) by scrubbing the five boroughs clean of any personality at all. Whether it's cigarettes or fatty foods or mom and pop stores or firehouse garage doors, the scrubbers are out.
Bad behavior does not equal crime, or even negligence. Most of us are smart enough to know the difference. Personally, I'd welcome a little bad behavior around here.

Sorry for the double-post, more server problems.
If a guy is going to drag my family out of a burning building, he can have goatsechs on his patch/firehouse/whatever for all I care.

Blow off steam?
go to the gym.
You are a representative of the city. Act like one. I think everyone understands that these people are putting themselves in harms way to protect us and they are far more respected than cops. Just ask any cop.
You know how much money you are going to make going into this job. Its not a surprise. You don't see teachers pulling this crap.
That said, I think there are far more issues facing the FDNY than the names of their houses.
its just a name
Sure beats investigating our Senator Joe Bruno's

nutjobs are trying to kill all that is different
and humorous in this city.
