9/11 Survivors' Staircase Moves Into Storage (For Now)

This morning, the "Survivors' Staircase," which people escaping the World Trade Center used on September 11 and is the last remaining part of the WTC, was moved this morning. The staircase will be in storage just 200 feet from its location at Vesey and Church until it can be moved to the for a few months until it can be placed into the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

The staircase, which connected the WTC's outdoor plaza with the street, was named one of America's Most Endangered Places by the National Trust for Historical Preservation in 2006, when it seemed likely they would be destroyed in redevelopment plans. But last year, the Spitzer administration suggested moving the stairs to the museum.

The AP reports the stairs, which were "whittled down to 65 tons" in order to be moved (there's also "an elaborate steel bracing system that took three months to build"), were placed onto a flatbed truck by a crane. The stairs will also be covered in plywood and Styrofoam. It's expected the stairs will be moved to the site of the museum in the summer.

One person who used the stairs on September 11, Tim Canavan, said he tunneled out of debris before getting to the stairs, "Time seemed to move very fast. It took me about 20 minutes to tunnel out, just digging. I had no fingernails left when I got to the top." He also said, "Without that staircase, I don't see myself getting out of that plaza before the north tower comes down and kills me."

I was totaly in shock that morning, 9-11-01. I woke up at 12:30 p.m. central time turned on the t.v. after taking a shower. I was horrified to see the planes crashing over and over simultaneausly. I found out later that my cousin lives in an apartment building very close tot he Pentagon and he woke up to the roar of a big airplane flying low. He made it onto the rooftop just in time to see the plane hit the Pentagon and explode. I read other reports that the plane clipped power and telephone lines as it made the fast move tot he Pentagon. I shocked to the point of did we not see something like this at the Movie theater 2 months ago and it was called "Pearl Harbor" starring Kate Beckinsale, Casey Affleck, Ben Affleck, Josh Hartnett, Jaime King, and Jennifer Garner? When the nurses come running in to the hospital and Kate says, "Doc..Get to
the supply room, get everything out!" A plane rolled by. An orderly came in and said the planes were coming, cut them now! Get them away from the windows!. The men screamed. The nurses covered themselves and the men with mattresses. A bomb dropped blew up a car and the windows to the ward blew out. The army major came in. An orderly screamed bad neck wound. Kate screamed surgery, now. A piece of shrapnel put a hole in hsi carotid artery. The little blood jumped on Kate's apron. The major begged her not to let him die. Kate took her two fingers after moving his shirt collar away.
Kate plugged his artery with her two fingers. Also the orderly was trying to put a hemostat ona soldier's leg. He screamed at Jennifer to hurry, hemostat. Jennifer dropped everything. She said she was sorry and gave the orderly the hemostat. I thought if this happened in the United States again, here's what the hospitals would look like when every injured sailor was seen being brought out of the ambulances at the hospital where Kate worked playing "Evelyn." This is probably what the hospitals were like on 9-11-01 for the nurses and medical staff.
