Hillary Clinton may have won more votes in Tuesday’s crucial primaries, but the victories barely made a dent in Barack Obama’s lead, narrowing the gap by only a few delegates. Unless scandal or some other meltdown severely damages Obama, Clinton’s chances of beating him on pledged delegates are extremely difficult.
The strategy for Clinton now is, first and foremost, to stop a growing number of superdelegates from committing to Obama at the convention. Clinton's arguing, given her March 4 “reversal," is they should hold off on decisions at least until the Pennsylvania primary on April 22nd, a primary Clinton is currently favored to win.
Clinton is also still pushing hard for the Michigan and Florida delegates she won to be seated at the convention. Those states were stripped of their delegates after moving their contests to early dates against the DNC orders (neither candidate campaigned there; Obama wasn't even on the Michigan ballot).
Party head Howard Dean now says he’s open to a highly unusual “do-over” primary vote in both states, but refuses to use party funds to pay for it all. On the Early Show, Dean said, "We can't afford to do that. That's not our problem. We need our money to win the presidential race." Governors from both states are pushing for the do-over.
And Bill Clinton (remember him?) was permitted to be seen in public with his wife today, after his earlier outbursts were blamed for hobbling her campaign. The couple took a walk in the park near their D.C. home; Hillary spoke to reporters while Bubba, newly reformed, held his tongue. Clinton has raised $3 million since Tuesday and is expected in Mississippi tomorrow, which has a primary on Tuesday. Obama is now in Wisconsin, where 12 delegates will be at stake on Saturday.
if Hill and Obama team up, the Dems will be unstoppable for 16 years.
I bet Hillary would like to be on top.
The Farrakhan smear and the Midnite Call ads were the last straw. I'm crossing Hilary Clinton off my list even if she beats Obama. She's just another politician who'll take us all down with her in the struggle to glorify her own ego.
Wyoming will have 7 delegates at stake on Saturday.
Can they possibly fix the primary/delegate selection process sometime soon? This is crazy.
I can solve the MI/FL issue...
1. Re-do MI since only one candidate was on the ballot and have the state and the DNC split the costs.
2. Count FL as voted since both Hillary and Obama were on the ballot.
Hillary gets her Florida win. Obama gets a new election in MI. Each candidate gets something without really losing anything in the delegate count.
We call it a compromise.
Yet another reason to have a national primary or adopt the much more civilized Canadian system of government.
oh yeah, and if you see hilary, tell her to tell bill thanks a lot for not signing to repeal the travesty of human rights/continued HIV ban on non immigrants in 1993. so...a nice round of f*** you to both of them.
obama '08.
sorry i meant continued HIV ban on non-citizens, well thanks for nothing HIL and BILL...
This election is hilarious!!!!! watching the Dems smack each other in the face black and blue, i mean white, losing money and speed. This is what the dems get for having too many special interest groups.
I observe that Obama has played the game by the rules from the outset, but that the game doesn't always return the favor, eh?
Watch them go by popular vote, or decide to include the excluded states with no due notice. Just watch.
He could have played by other rules and done just as well, but that's not what will count for the superdelegates if they start favoring Clinton.
MJG,
I don't think that your compromise works.
Why should Obama give Clinton Florida? Yes, his name was on the ballot, but he followed the rules and DIDN'T CAMPAIGN THERE. After the shenanigans of the last elections, everyone knows how vital Florida is to win the presidency. Had the primary been in accordance with the rules and had Obama made an effort to campaign there, maybe the results would be different.
You can't change the rules mid-game. There is no way that Clinton would be taking this position is she hadn't have won FL.
I support MJG's proposal. Neither Clinton nor Obama campaigned in Florida and both of their names were on the ballot. Dean is trying too hard to save face when he and the national party should be trying to work with the state parties, and offer to compromise just a little (like footing some of the bill for the revotes). Why can't the Democrats run a decent party?
what of sociopath would vote for hillary clinton?
Hillary is too much of a slimeball to be considered on any ticket. I'd vote for her to run into traffic, but that's about it.
I think you're neglecting the most important thing:
!!!!!!I think I speak for all of us when I say that a world without Patrick Swayze is not a world I want to live in.
Narrowing the gap "by only a few delegates," not widening. Obama is ahead.
I think it works great, gobama, because it avoids alienating a crucial Nov. state without allowing rulebreaking to alter the voting of states who played by the rules.
Obviously, Hillary is acting in her best interest. You think Obama would act differently in her position?
Democrats need to unite as a party and this is a good place to start. I think Obama has got a pretty tight grip on the nomination. If he gave ground on something like this, it might show a capacity to do things for reasons other than pure self-interest.
Oh, btw, Nobody puts Swayze in a coffin!
