Visiting the "Indie Cribz" of New York Bands

200803eamhouse.jpgThe Village Voice has taken a page from MTV and begun to invade the cribs of rock stars. Okay, indie rock stars...who haven't quite broken out of their downtown bubble yet.

First up on Indie Cribz (it's really called that): Team Robespierre. Mediocre band, amazing "semi-legal" apartment story.

Bassist of the band, Mike House, lives in a former squat on 9th Street between Avenues C and D. In 2002 Giuliani sold the former squat to a non-profit housing corporation called the Urban Homesteading Assistance Board; someday (over the rainbow) the 20 residents will apparently own their apartments. Currently Mr. House pays 70 bucks a month to live "where the magic happens."

wow, are all you guys too cool for school or what?

  • Bouncing Soul

I would hope these boho douches didn't live in C-Squat. The guys from Leftover Crack should get these guys off their block and send them packing to Williamsburg.

    and these guys are gaye.

  • tnturner

C Squat is actually on C not 9th and is still there, but going thru a similar "legalization" effort.

i don't think this is the same building as See Squat, though it's on the same street. but that spooked me for a second, seeing french doors and v-neck sweatered dudes wandering around.

If my rent was $70/mo and "semi-legal" I sure as hell wouldn't BRAG ABOUT IT PUBLICLY.

There's nothing punk, hyphy or hardhouse about this saccharine tigerbeat bullshit band.

P.S. The fuck is Team Robespierre?!

I don't normally watch "Cribs" to find out about someone or discover a new artist.

    This is lame.

  • matty

jen should shouldn't be allowed to do "culture" pieces anymore.

Wow. This was the old, infamous "C-Squat". Everyone lived & played there. Like some serious musicians and artists. Now this dolt lives there. Nice.

  • neckbeard

i'm pretty sure a few members of the bouncing souls used to live there...

also, $70 a month? really? that's ridiculous...good to see that the right people are getting helped in nyc
