Fresh off her big night of wins in Ohio and Texas, Hillary Clinton spoke on CBS's Early Show and mentioned the words "dream ticket" in relation to the heated Democratic presidential race. Harry Smith told Clinton, "We talked to a lot of people in Ohio who said there really isn't that significant a difference between you two, and they'd like to see you both on the ticket." After remarking how "incredibly close" the race is, she said pairing up "may be where this is headed, but we have to decide who is on the top of the ticket, and I think that the people of Ohio very clearly said that it should be me."
Of course, Barack Obama, who thinks talking about a joint ticket is "premature," told the Early Show, "We still have close to an insurmountable lead in delegates." And the Daily News' Errol Louis thinks a Dream Team ticket is more like a nightmare for a number of reasons, the greatest being "both Clinton and Obama are skimpy on diplomatic and military experience."
As for why Clinton won, some suggest attacking Obama worked, dooming the rest of America to be subject to a nasty fight between both campaigns for the remaining primaries. And it's possible Clinton's victories actually cause more problems for herself and the Democratic Party. The NY Times says "simple math is still her enemy" and Newsweek suggests even with superdelegates and Florida and Michigan votes, Clinton can't cinch the nomination. The Post's Charles Hurt calls her the "Strife of the Party," pointing out that if she demands Florida delegates to be counted, it'll make Republicans thrilled.
Politico has good write-ups about exit polls in Texas and Ohio - one big factor was white male voters.
I think Obama's whole NAFTA mess may have helped Clinton win the Ohio primary.
The Clinton supporters I met are a lot more flexible than the Obama supporters. They say they would be willing to back Obama if he wins the nomination but the Obama supporters say they rather not vote at all if he does't win. =/
Makes the whole dream ticket issue farfetched.
A "dream ticket"? Is she out of her mind? Unfortunately this country won't see it that way. It'll be tough enough to get the majority of the country to vote for a black guy or a white woman. If they're on the same ticket, then they basically handed the presidency to John McCain on a silver platter.
it's about time. i also agree with the number 1 commenter sadly. obama supporters seem very narrowminded about him running under hillary- which i find rather strange. i think it would be great! CLINTON/OBAMA!!!
So you actually think Hillary would run for vice president? I THINK NOT! Talk about narrow minded! She's only saying this cause she thinks she might win - she isn't going to and she won't take the VP's job for all the tea in china.
Running as Hillary's VP seems to me to be antithetical to what Obama has been saying all along.
she isn't going to and she won't take the VP's job for all the tea in china.
Pretty sure that wasn't the dream ticket anyone had in mind. . . .
Matty, I can't see Obama bowing to Hillary, either. Both have very strong personalities. This Dream Ticket is a fantasy.
Let's suppose for a moment that we approach the convention with both candidates neck-and-neck as far as delegate count is concerned, with neither candidate clinching. There will need to be some intense behind-the-scenes negotiating to come out with a nominee and party support. I wouldn't rule out a Obama-Clinton or a Clinton-Obama ticket.
They'd be smart to stop the negative campaigning now.
The goal of the Democratic Party should be winning the election and not alienating the public. McCain is smiling broadly now, as he views the prospective self-destruction of the
Democratic Party.
The Obama supporters say that now, but I'd bet a large majority of them would come around before November (assuming Hillary pulls out a miracle). Same goes for the GOPs. Some say they won't vote for McCain, but in the privacy of the voting booth, they'll do it. The stakes are just too great to "protest" in that manner.
No I would vote for McCain. I like him better than Hillary.
So yes I would vote republican before I would put Hillary in the White House.
matty i'm sure i will regret asking... but why?
It is a sad day in America when fear based campaigning of the Rovian sort defeat a hopeful message. I had expected this type of crap in the general election but thought (rather naively I guess) that Hillary would be above it. Some argue that her fear mongering attacks on Obama show she is better suited to fight McCain, but why should the dirtier candidate win?
only a buffoon (of which there are many i believe) would believe this calculating new move by clinton. it is unlikely to have the stronger obama be her vp, almost impossible. perhaps instead she should campaign to be vp under mccain, since she'll do anything, say anything for the vote.
i am an obama supporter, but you best believe i rather vote for the warmongerer mcain if he was up against the horrible hilary, and i will do it at six in the morning when polls open, too.
same i did to vote against her in senate...though that was failed...
McCain is a social and fiscal conservative. However he's not a christian conservative like bush. McCain IS the experienced candidate. He pushed through the McCain-Feingold bill, he has helped tackle companies like Boeing for being in cahoots with the Air Force to win company contracts, etc, etc...
Like Obama, McCain is a progressive. He is new, he gets things done and he is neither a Bush nor a Clinton.
If gothamist readers who offer their 2 cents are any indication, there'll be a lot of 'democrats' voting McCain when they step into the voting booth in November. Guess we should tell our young men and women in the military not to make any plans for the next sixty years, as they will be needed for twenty to thirty tours of duty in Iraq.
I don't understand the Obama supporters who'd rather see McCain in the White House than Hillary Clinton. I'm no great fan of either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama, but you bet your ass I'm never voting for McCain, because his positions are the antithesis of everything I stand for. (I've also seen a lot of Ron Paul supporters who think Obama is the best second choice, which doesn't make sense either, since Ron Paul and Barack Obama are opposites on pretty much every policy issue).
But then, I never understood the vitriolic loathing for Hillary Clinton anyway. Does she make a habit of running over people's puppies or something?
Exactly, Jen S - I cannot imagine Obama bowing to both, yes, Bill and Hillary. Worse yet, I don't think Obama would allow himself to be reduced to the "House.....
I would also vote McCain....if Obama were elected. I think many Hil and Obama supporters at least agree on this one point.
Voting against a candidate because you dislike their personality is the reason our country is in such a mess. I hope people will come to their senses and vote on the issues, many of which will affect us for years to come.
A Hillary ticket of any sort will never beat McCain. Too many Republicans have made it a sport to hate her. So this dream ticket is just that: a far fetched dream.
Whomever the dem candidate is--and i hope it's obama--it would behoove that person to get someone with some military or diplomacy experience in the VP spot. of course, I have no idea who the hell that would be.
I think that everyone is hung up on being anti-hillary or anti-barack. It's the combination that will be the nail in the coffin for this country (election-wise. I think they'd do a fine job together). The problem is the underestimation of scared white people. If they see a black guy and a white woman on the same ticket, they will vote for WHOMEVER IS THE OTHER CANDIDATE. They will vote for "old white guy" because its comforting, its what they know, it isn't threatening to change the country because it's been running for 200+ years on "old white guy".
we could be set up for the next 16 years.
experience and inspiration can go hand in hand.
stand behind your party people.
obama is just like bush in 00. He was spouting a hopeful message too. Obama supporters are a bunch of buffoons! the NY post is anti-Hilary and that's all that needs to be said. They want Obama to win so he'll get his ass kicked by McCain. they fear Hilary with every fiber of their being and that's why I'm voting for her. White apologists can vote for obama.
Whatever happend to the good ole days when the loser of the Presidential election became the VP? At least it kept things a bit more balanced since everyone nowadays just wants to stick to party lines instead of using their own judgement.
"McCain is a social and fiscal conservative. However he's not a christian conservative like bush."
He may not personally be a christian conservative, but that's still his party's base. Note that his stance on christian conservatives has done a complete 180.
"Whomever the dem candidate is--and i hope it's obama--it would behoove that person to get someone with some military or diplomacy experience in the VP spot. of course, I have no idea who the hell that would be."
Wesley Clark.
"If gothamist readers who offer their 2 cents are any indication..
I don't think they are any indication. Another thing we're kind of ignoring here is that it doesn't really matter what a few people in NY think. McCain isn't winning the state. The question is if this irrational thinking also occurs in states like Florida, Ohio, New Mexico, etc. No doubt there will be some Dems who won't vote for the other dem.. but imo they're an extremely vocal, but extremely small, minority. I also hope that people have learned their lesson from 2000 about voting based on spite.
It's not spite. He's the second best candidate - behind Obama.
Hillary for president. You have to read between the lines the Republican tactic is to run against Obama because they know he is just a baby with no experience. McCain will take over. My vote will go to MacCain.
"Whatever happend to the good ole days when the loser of the Presidential election became the VP? At least it kept things a bit more balanced..."
How does it keep things more balanced? The VP has no power, except in relatively rare circumstances. And since the Senate has basically become a 60 vote body, the VP's power is almost nil.
is there anyone other than wes clark? i am acutally a big fan of wes clark and think he'd be a great VP selection for either hil or oba. He endorsed Hil in September. hopefully he would cross over.
Hypothetical question: what if Hill had Bill be her VP? Is that possible, and if so, would it work?
No, it's not possible. No person constitutionally ineligible to be President can be Vice-President.
I'm sure there are others than Clark, but honestly I don't see why anyone else should even be considered (obviously, I'm also a Wes Clark fan).
Bill can't be VP.
Hillary's 1st VP choice HAS to be Obama. Evan Bayh (IN) could be picked, too.
Obama should pick Biden.
Clark will probably be Sec. of Defense.
Dream ticket for republicans: bigots and misogynists are covered in one ticket!
Clark cannot be SecDef, at least initially, because he won't be 10 years out of active service.
Why is Hillary talking about a Clinton/Obama ticket now? It's because Hillary wants Obama out of her way. It's just as simple as that. Hillary is, as we know her, all about Hillary and she will do and say anything to get what she wants.
I don't think Obama and Hillary would make a great team. She doesn't even like Obama. I agree that McCain will easily defeat Hillary or a Hillar/Barack ticket.
By the way, I find it curious that there is no story on Rezko today or NAFTA and the Canadians. hmmmmmmmm
I'm an Obama supporter. If Obama loses this nomination I will get behind Hillary in a second. I would also support Hillary as a VP. I highly doubt Obama would run as Hillary's VP.
Obama '08
This "dream" ticket is Hillary's dream.
Obama is the frontrunner, so there's no reason for him to want to be VP to Hillary for the next 8 years.
There's no reason for Obama to want Hillary as a running mate. High negative numbers, plus the prospect of her backstabbing him every chance she gets, plus whatever trouble Bill can get into... Sounds more like a nightmare for Obama than a dream.
imo, the democrats seem poised to bungle yet another election...
No, it's not possible. No person constitutionally ineligible to be President can be Vice-President.
Can you explain your logic on how you reached this conclusion? I used to think this but now I am not so sure. The 12th amendment says "But no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States." Since the 12th amendment was ratified in 1804 it's probably safe to assume the writers were referring back to the original document of the Constitution in which the framers wrote that a person had to be 35 years of age and a natural born citizen of the United States. The 22nd amendment only says a person can't be elected to the office of the President more than twice. I don't think that has to be interpreted as ineligible to hold the office. What if a former President was Speaker of the House and backed in through succession? Or was appointed VP? Would you say they were ineligible to be President then even if they had not been elected VP? I think a person could make a pretty strong case that Bill Clinton could be VP and assume the Presidency. If one were so inclined you could probably get a Yale Con Law prof to argue this one to the Supreme Court.
The whole problem is that campaigns are all about personality. Everything has been turned into the Jerry Springer show.
I personally believe campaigning should not be allowed and voters should have to make decisions based solely on documents describing where candidates stand on issues.
If it's not entertaining enough, tough shit. At least only those who actually give a damn will participate in the process and we'll end up with leaders who know what they're doing.
As for those of you who won't support an opposing candidate in the general elections if yours doesn't win the primary, I have 2 words for you: You idiots.
"How does it keep things more balanced? The VP has no power, except in relatively rare circumstances. And since the Senate has basically become a 60 vote body, the VP's power is almost nil."
So what you're telling me is that Dick Cheney has done nothing substantial while in office? Interesting.
Anyway, my post was meant to be sarcastic, not literal. But since you took it that way, I would think that having a VP that's not a 'yes man' would help the President. If the two were from different parties, they could use diplomacy and tact to get things done instead of sitting around in a circle jerk.
Politburo, thanks for the info. I didn't know that.
FYI, George Marshall was SecDef only 5 years out of the military. But, Congress had to pass a law to allow it. He was Sec. of State before being SecDef, too.
Thought that was interesting...
These comments scare me. I have no party allegiance. I'm registered independent because I prefer to see what candidate is the best. However, the idea to switch from Obama to McCain is beyond me. The two are exact opposites! Obama and Hillary, on the other hand, are similar. To be for Obama and not Hillary, depending on who wins the nomination, is ridiculous. I thought that at least in New York I wouldn't be hearing this. But if its here, its in the rest of the country and McCain will inevitably win. Very disheartening.
John McCain will appoint anti-choice judges and continue the War in Iraq indefinitely. Hillary will create universal health care. This choice could not be easier people! Obama supporters continue to show their naivete.
"This choice could not be easier people! Obama supporters continue to show their naivete."
Actually, anyone who votes Democrat or Republican show their naivete, and an unwillingness to think the issues through, instead voting for their party's candidate because it's the 'right' thing to do.
It makes sense for Hillary to take Obama as VP, b/c her campaign currently has a complete dearth of charm and charisma. She needs someone who can speak and smile and debate in all the ways she can't.
However, her ego would not allow her to take VP under Obama. She believes it is her divine right to the presidency b/c of her long, loveless marriage to a fillandering asshole. Additionally, it adds virtually NO constituency to the Obama campaign. Think he couldn't carry New York, NJ, Mass as the nominee?
Obama's prime VP candidate should be someone established with southern ties: Edwards or Clark. An Obama/Edwards ticket has me licking my chops...but Clark has military ties which could be helpful.
Please not Edwards. Enough of him.
Clark/Biden/Webb/Bayh for VP.
