Brooklyn College Gets Residential

200803dorm.jpgBrooklyn College is joining the ranks of other New York academic establishments by adding a dorm next spring (something they've already started, and stopped, work on). The school has a little over 15,000 grads and undergrads, with about 99% hailing from New York and 77% from Brooklyn. The school hopes that by adding a dorm, some out-of-staters will flock to Midwood.

The Daily News reports the eight-story Farragut Road building will house about 214 students in 115 units of 60,000-square-feet of rental housing. Developed by New Brooklyn Development, who have worked on New York University and Pratt's dorms, the "prospective residents of the dorm would qualify for affordable rent in each of the single-bedroom, two-bedroom and studio apartments."

The lucky 214 will enjoy an internet cafe, concierge services, a gymnasium, laundry facilities and plasma-screen TVs in each room. The school's statement included one piece of developer-speak we actually believe, "We anticipate this development to be highly beneficial to the community in general, bringing new residents and revenue to the area, beautifying the area with greenscaping and plants and, most importantly, the vitality that responsible, hard-working students bring."

jesus.. 99% from ny?? why did nobody tell me this before i transfered there four years ago?

it all makes sense now. i'm glad being a transplant.

It sounds like the same BS that Hunter says about the Brookdale dorms. They are supposed to choose people who are out-of-state or international just like Brooklyn College is claiming, but the weird thing is that I know 6 people over at the Brookdale dorms (which is really small) and they are all from Long Island. I also have friends who are out-of-state and a few International friends who applied for a room and didn't get selected. Hmmm...

Mm yeah in general CUNY is not very accommodating for out-of-state applicants. I don't think it's really part of their mission, like, at all. These dorms are a positive step, though.

They've been talking about this ever since I was there which was nearly 15yrs ago and nothing ever became of all this talk. I'll believe it when I see it.

". . . most importantly, the vitality that responsible, hard-working students bring."

Right, because college kids always make great neighbors.
