ART: Unhappy with your old point and shoot? Today marks the opening of the National Krappy Kamera Competition, proving that even inexpensive cameras can snap good shots. "The exhibit features images that are produced using equipment from the lowest end of the technological scale. The concept underlying this show is that an artist can use any piece of equipment to create engaging photographs. Cameras generally range from the well-known Diana, Holga and Lubitel to obscure junkstore finds and homemade pinhole jobs." The exhibit is open through March 29th.
THEATER:We saw the phenomenal new Broadway show Passing Strange two Saturdays ago and can’t stop thinking about it. This euphoric rock musical is arguably the most exciting show to hit Broadway in recent memory, and it's not to be missed. The blistering onstage band is fronted by co-composer and narrator Stew, who leads his talented actors on a semi-autobiographical adventure from his Church-going middle class L.A. upbringing to his eye-opening experiences abroad in Amsterdam and Berlin. What the evening lacks in dramatic tension, it more than makes up for with an irresistible, cross-genre score, warm hearted humor, inspired staging and a brilliant ensemble. Go see it! – John Del Signore
EVENT:Edible Brooklyn editor Gabrielle Langholtz hosts a benefit tonight for the school library at PS 107. Three foodie authors will be on hand serving up stories from their books; Phoebe Damrosch (Service Included), Kara Zuaro (I Like Food, Food Tastes Good) and David Wondrich (Imbibe!) will all entertain as you enjoy some cocktails.
7 p.m. // The powerHouse Arena [37 Main St, DUMBO] // $15
BINGO/MUSIC: Make a night of it at Pete's Candy Store. Start off with a game of Bingo at 7, you won't win any money -- but "funny prizes" are promised. Stick around for Cohen, a musician who creates what is described as GYPSYPOP! ("acoustic gypsy music with melodies that live in the deep resources of the soul").
