A Pretty Penny for Final Shea, Yankee Stadium Games

2008_03_sunsetyankeestadium.jpgYou may have heard that New York City will have two new ballparks to attend in 2009. Of course that means that Shea Stadium and Yankee Stadium will close their doors forever after the 2008 season. And if you want to be there for the last scheduled game at either venue, you better have a lot of money. Tickets for the finale at Yankees Stadium are being scalped online for as much as $17,000 with tickets for the Shea Stadium finale, and last chance to see the Home Run Apple, going for “only” up to $6,000.

Before you go and empty your retirement plan, consider a couple of things. First off, if either team makes the playoffs, the last game will be a playoff game and you will have wasted your money. Secondly, the Mets have not sold out all of their ticket plans, so you could always get tickets that way.

It’s not just the end of 2008 that has scalpers in a frenzy. The All-Star Game is going to be at Yankee Stadium and tickets for that are going for up to $25,000. With the economy in the tank and all this money being asked for tickets, does this mean we might have a chance at tickets to Opening Day 2009?

last chance to see the Home Run Apple,

Reports from a few weeks ago said the Apple's coming to Citi, FYI.

Re: Yankee Stadium tix.
I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it any more...or something like that.
I've subscribed to Yankees ticket plans for more than ten years. For the first time, this year, I had to participate in a "lottery" for "premium dates," including opening day, Mets and Red Sox series and the concluding regular-season series.
Of course, my name was not selected. Like Hanna Montana tickets, I'm sure ticket brokers loaded the system with lottery entries and are scooping up those tickets for later resale on Craigslist, Stubhub and other scalping venues. I comfort myself by knowing there are far more important things in the world that attending a Yankee game. Thanks George and Sons.

There are some fairly cheap tickets on Stubhub for Old Timers day.

i believe that's an apple, not THE apple.

Demand has outstripped supply and it is only going to get worse next year with two lower capacity stadia. The supply needs to be increased with a third major league team!

Good point, Joe. Until that day, there's some fun minor league ball to be seen within an hour or so of NYC. Aside from Brooklyn and Staten Island, there are several NJ teams. The Trenton Thunder is the Yankees AA affiliate and can easily be reached by train. Tickets are cheap, available. The stadium is a pleasure, with locally microbrewed beer (River Horse Brewery) and a beautiful view of the Delaware River. An afternoon game can be topped off with Trenton-style pizza (called 'tomato pies') in the Chambersburg neighborhood, not far from Riverside Park.

Citibank Park in Islip is nice and I have heard good things about "The Dutch" in Wappinger's Falls.

It would be great to get NY back to a 3-team city, but I don't think the Mets or Yankees would ever let that happen.

Yeah, those lotteries are shitty (and I say this as someone who got picked to buy tickets in the Mets' premium games lottery this year). Unfortunately I think the teams care less and less about resale as long as they get their money up front.

"i believe that's an apple, not THE apple."

I'll dig for it later, but I remember the article that I read saying that it's going to be the same apple from Shea.

However, for the amount of money they're putting into the new stadium, it wouldn't kill them to get a new one. Other wise, it's like bringing along your beat-up, stained & smelly old couch into your new million dollar home.

I think they haven't settled it yet, but they have apparently made a spot for something.
