Abandoned Baby's Father Wants to Surrender

2008_03_abanbaby.jpg

The father who wanted to give up his 6-month-old baby out of desperation has told the police he wants to surrender. Carlos Rodas, 27, was overwhelmed when his 14-year-old girlfriend and the mother of the baby left him to care for their daughter, so he, his sister, and her boyfriend, a livery cab driver, worked out a plan for the driver to leave the baby at a Queens fire house.

The story of the abandoned baby, a healthy adorable tot, drew media attention as the police asked for help in identifying her and the Taxi and Limousine Commission commended driver Klever Sailema, who said a man left her in the backseat. However, when it was revealed the driver knew the father, Sailema and Rodas' sister Maria Siavichay were arrested and the police searched for Rodas.

Siavichay and Sailema appeared at a press conference yesterday afternoon, and after urging her brother to turn himself in, Siavichay explained, '"My brother already had problems with the law, and his girlfriend was a minor. He was afraid that if they caught him with the child, he would be arrested." Sailema also apologized for making up the story.

Taxi union head Fernando Mateo defended Sailema's actions and asked for the charges to be dropped, "All these people did was...take the child to a safe haven." Mayor Bloomberg even commented about the case: "I think common sense says if [Sailema] was trying to do the right thing, a judge will interpret the law in a way that's not too punitive." The Queens DA's office said it was reviewing the case.

As for baby Daniella, she is with a foster family; the NY Foundling Agency told the Daily News, "She's adorable and delightful. They're goo-gooing all over her." ACS also has custody of the baby's mother, whom Mateo claims Rodas took from a detention center in Maryland. Mateo said, "He knows that that was wrong. The guy knows that he's in trouble."

The mother was 12-13 years old when she got pregnant and the father was 25-26 years old. The father should be worried because he will be charged with statutory rape.

disgusting.

In his country it is legal to do that.

"my brother already had problems with the law"

duh! most child-rapist's do

and if that taxi driver was really just trying "to do the right thing" he would have turned this pervert in a long time ago

This is probably the best thing that could have happened to that baby. Hopefully, she will be adopted by a nice family.

Gross!!! I'm trying to remember back when I was 12-13, and cannot fathom wanting a 25-year-old's penis anywhere NEAR me. Not even my great-great-great grandmother was having kids this early on the farm.

I'm often amazed at the similarities between NYC and some frightening rural hillbilly communities.

what's perhaps scarier is that the mainstream media has been so fixated on the driver (victim) and the baby (cute, victim!!) that they have totally neglected the real story: the rape of a 12 yr old girl by a 25 yr old man. Really, really bad reporting all around.

really bad reporting? i thought that was status quo for the daily news and post.

If the guy was white and it happened in Staten Island the media would be all over the child rape angle. As it is, they're just practicing the usual journalistic "sensitivity" to "diversity" and "multiculturalism". For another example, see the apartment fire in the Bronx home of one man and his multiple wives resulted in the deaths of several children but no media interest in the polygamy angle. None.

Every time I see this kid she's wearing a headband. She must have some collection.

But how's that policy of leaving the kid in hands of authorities without being punished, "a safe haven"
and this case.
It seems that was what they did; took the kid to fire station.

Safe Haven:
"The new law says that you can leave your baby with any appropriate person. In New York, this is generally understood as going to a hospital, a police station, or a fire station.

Good job!
Whats next? Giving the names and addresses of crime tipsters to the Post?

Sick bastard. Hope they throw the book at him.

I know who this baby's real father is. Barack Obama! that kid looks just like him. ears and everything.

Amanda & pissyrabbit: The Safe Haven law applies only to newborns. This child is not a newborn, so that law does not apply.

TSOL: Maybe no one (and, incidentally, it wasn't no one by the time the coverage was over) was talking about the polygamy angle because it didn't actually have any relevance to the story of the fire. (And also because, frankly, who the hell cares?) In this case, yes, they ought to be talking about the child rape angle because it is relevant, but I expect we'll get a little more of that story once they finally arrest the guy.
