Sun Columnist Makes Case for "Governor Bloomberg"

2008_03_bloobmergspitz.jpgJust because Mayor Bloomberg has denied running for governor in 2010 doesn't mean it has to be true! The Sun's Davidson Goldin thinks that for Bloomberg, "Running for governor is likely, and becoming more so."

Why? Well, though the mayor and Governor Spitzer have tried to be cooperative, Albany is involved in many plans the Mayor has a stake in, such as congestion pricing, OTB, and the Javits Center, not to mention Moynihan Station and funding to the city. They have criticized each other, like during Spitzer's licenses-for-illegal-immigrant plan, a plan Mayor was "skeptical"of "because it then leads to lots of other problems," leading the Steamroller to respond, "He is wrong at every level - dead wrong, factually wrong, legally wrong, morally wrong, ethically wrong."

Republicans would love nothing more than to get Governor Spitzer out of office. Goldin thinks Bloomberg still wants to be a mover and shaker in politics, and ultimately, "it's as hard to envision Mr. Bloomberg not running for governor as it was to envision him actually running for president.

As for Bloomberg's $500,000 recent donation to NY State GOP, Democratic reaction ranges from annoyed (he'll have enemies if the Democrats win control of the Senate) to understanding (Bloomberg is "loyal").

How about Bloomberg retires from politics. I'm getting tired of these big dollar guys in politics.

I can't believe Bloomberg would want to live in Albany. Or deal with Sheldon Silver that much.

  • i could see this happening. i just wonder if he could get enough support outside nyc.
