New York’s Best of New York lifestyle catalog is out, and among the rightful winners, like Best Old School Lobby: The Chrysler Building and Best Dive Bar: Mars Bar, there are some curious ‘bests’ to ponder.
In the New York Classics section, for instance, the sterile, six-month old Music Hall of Williamsburg is hailed for its “unequaled” sound and sightlines. This club had infinitely more character when it was Northsix, and although the overbearing bouncers have finally started letting patrons stand next to the balcony railing, for our money the “Best Rock Club” in New York City is still Bowery Ballroom, or maybe Warsaw.
The Best Pizza by Borough picks are sure to be divisive, with Una Pizza Napoletana taking the Manhattan title. And you'd be naive to think New York’s best roller coaster is on Coney Island; it’s in Bristol Connecticut, built into the side of the mountain. (All due respect to the Cyclone, it does look exhilarating.)
The best of the Best of issue, which tends to read like an in-flight magazine aimed at business class travelers, are the quirky picks, like “Best Free Booze,” which on Monday nights is poured down the throat of any patron of Hank’s Saloon who gets up to sing along with the Brooklyn Country All-Stars. And the best reason to visit Staten Island according to New York Mag? Roller Jam USA (pictured).
The editors commissioned covers from five different designers and are sharing all the results here. The best rejected cover is the Wolff Olins design, which simply shows a phone number [212-471-1555] jotted down on a scrap of paper. (It’s a working number, with a slightly amusing voicemail message.)

worst. magazine. ever.
Always ironic when a "best of" magazine goes with a particularly lame cover. Maybe it's just me, but most of those felt very 1989... when they still would've been lame.
These best of issues make the magazine more of a joke than it normally is, especially the roller coaster thing. Since when is Connecticut part of New York City or even New York State? It isn't like it is just over the river in Jersey or anything.
Now did they pay the MTA for use of the subway map?
meh. highline ballroom beats the shit out of bowery & MHoW.
better free booze deal: Bar BQ in south slope (19th & 6th) has free whiskey every monday..and the bonus is you don't have to associate yourself with the "brooklyn country scene"
also, i was flipping through this today..is it me or is there a disproportional amount of coverage for midtown restaurants?
way to stay on the cutting edge, nymag.
The Mars Bar will outlast all of the trendy businesses brought in via gentrification. Satan himself is protecting the Mars Bar.
The best pizza borough is Staten Island every year. There is an Italian owned pizzeria every 100 feet on Staten Island. Come on.
The Liberty Inn?!?!
You have got to be kidding me!
They list the "hooker hotel" that me and all my friends spent our formative childhood years making fun of and watching prostitutes come and go from? On Best of NY? Ugh, that's gross! Maybe The Best Place To Catch an STD. I can't even believe they'd have this category to begin with.
Ah well, I guess if I'm looking at turning some tricks and saving some cash, I know where to go...
The phone number cover by Wolff Olins is a perfect example of what is wrong with art in nyc. Everyone is trying so hard to be push the idea...while mainly missing it all together.
