The MTA's various fare hikes for the NYC subways and buses, as well as its railroads, went into effect this weekend. Today, subway and bus base fares still cost $2, but higher-value pay-per-ride Metrocards have less of a bonus discount while weekly and monthly unlimited ride Metrocards are more expensive.
You can read more about the fare hikes here, but two important notes: (1)Unlimited ride Metrocards purchased before March 2 are still valid as long as they are used before March 10; and (2) Pay-per-ride Metrocards will still have bonus discounts, but there's a somewhat more complicated formula for the discounts (as evinced by the poster above).
One Staten Island family's increased transit expenses - almost $1000 more a year - are detailed in the Post because of the "double whammy": MTA fare hikes as well as Port Authority toll increases. One MTA rail rider whose Metro-North monthly pass costs $10 more told the Daily News, "It's still the most affordable way to commute to and from the city. If the subway goes up then I'll be upset." But then the reporter told her subway fares were going up, to which she said, "You are breaking my heart."
The News also helpfully points out MTA Executive Director Eliot Sander has a chauffeur (a police detective), who made $70,000 in overtime last year. (Flashback: In 2006, he told the Sun he'd be taking the subway to work.) Some reasons Sander has a chauffeur: He works late, he goes to job sites not accessible by mass transit, and he recently received a threat.
And we bet the fare hike is just salt in the wound for many F and G riders, after the weekend of the MTA making improvements to both lines. City Councilman David Yassky was critical, "These are life lines, the G in particular. They have no other choice. You know, people get very frustrated." He did, however, appreciate the transit workers who helped riders during the diversions.

all this hubub about the new fares being confusing...
i bought a new card today and it was like buying a card under the old fare price... easy.
I'm loving this "leftover balance" idea. Those cards are pretty resilient and can be used over and over. (I used one for almost two years.) Now with the leftover balance people will use these cards longer.
I'm loving how people are complaining about them doing maintenance. We're too fuckin' spoiled with this 24-hour nonsense. Would they prefer that the G fall into a fully complete state of disrepair that the trains can't run period?
Nivek- Us F/G riders don't mind the maintenance work so much, but the fact that it coincides the same day the fare hikes go up, left an entire swath of Brooklyn without any train service over the weekend and there was no prior notice that the service would be out all weekend, is pretty pitiful.
NY1 should do a bit deeper investigating...this was not the first weekend that F/G service has been disrupted, I can't remember when F/G service DID run as normal.
Wait, hold on... the "weird" denominations ($17.39, $52.17) are only sold at merchants? I can't buy them at a MetroCard vending machine like a normal person? What fucking sense does that make?
Not that it matters to me since I ride enough to make 30-day unlimited ride cards worthwhile every month, but it's the principle of the thing!
weird denominations at vending machines would be a disaster. while people like you and would use the mighty dollar or our credit cards, people, based on principal and douchbaggery, would use coins right down to the penny which would create long lines, something the vending machines are there to curb.
anyway, i do not think the vending machines can handle the pennies, nickels and dimes that would make change, if any... they only carry dollar coins and not everyone uses credit cards, in fact most people i see using the machines are always using cash.
they only provide change in dollar coins,
I think they can accept coins. I think I'll be a douchebag.
in terms of F/G service changes, check the MTA's website for Weekend Service Advisories. They always put this up in advance. Yes, it sucks, but they ARE warning you.
