Mom Arrested After Beating Son at Mall

2008_02_simall.gifWhen Staten Island Mall shoppers saw a mother beating her 3-year-old son Tuesday afternoon, some followed her to "make sure she didn't leave," reports the Staten Island Advance. Eventually, the police arrested 33-year-old Yesenia Hausler with felony assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

Hausler apparently became angry when her son either wanted to play with a new toy or wanted to buy a new toy, and punched and slapped him so hard there were handprints on his body. One witness said, "I couldn't believe it. I was shocked. I wanted to go home and take my kid out of school and just hug her."

According to court papers, Hausler told the police, "The only reason that this is a problem is because I am in this country. In my country, you can hit your kids." The Advance points out that Hausler has been an American citizen her whole life, growing up in Puerto Rico.

Her husband, who has custody of the child (the couple has two older children, too) suggested she could be suffering from post-partum depression, "(My) wife needs a little bit of help. We know that. Maybe she needs more than a little bit of help. I know she needs therapy."

I can't wait for the intolerant racist comments to pour in over this one.

exactly, see last week's 20/20 as an example.

i dont see what the problem is?

my mom beat me black and blue on a frequent basis.

look at me now,

i grew up into a a fine

upstanding internet blog troll.

duanereade:
I am intolerant when it comes to child abuse, yes.

When I get busted for drug possession, I'll try the "This is only a problem because I'm not in Amsterdam" argument.

If she doesn't like our laws, she can go back to Puerto Rico, which apparently is a toddler-beating paradise.

Isn't the "problem" with being in any country that one must follow its laws and all else which is customary?

See: Singapore

So is she going to be so pissed that she kills the kid next time? These things usually accelerate with each beating. And if the kid lives through his horrible childhood, statistics say that he will beat his own children. Fucked up aren't we?

To add insult to injury (no pun intended), she was parked in a handicapped spot:

At one point, he said, Mrs. Hausler walked out of the Mall without the boy. The kiosk employee and another woman followed her out. The female witness flagged a traffic attendant and asked her to stall Mrs. Hausler, who was parked in a handicapped spot, until police arrived on the scene, he said.

"But boss, that's a handicapped spot!"
"I am handicapped...I'm psychotic."

I don't think that she is handicapped. She was probably referring to her kid ending up handicapped in the near future.

Wrong either way.

A lot of bad press for SI lately - is it the new Bronx?

hmmm. which way to attack this? should I go for the racist undertones or the fact that she's from staten Island? I give up. too complicated.

Uh, you guys *do* realize that Puerto Rico is part of the United States, right? Last time I checked, you can't wallop your kid in the US of A.

Actually, in these here Unites states of America. The law of the land is Not that you can't use copral punishment on your child, it's that you can NOt use corpral punishment on your child in PUBLIC. So with that said, you can gladly take your child home, use corpral punishment there, and be well with in your rights.
Now the real confusion here is what os corpral punshment and how far can you take it? In general, corpral punishment is meant to be applied to the buttocks of the offending minor. It is not to be construed or used as liken with the days of old were one is strung up and beaten with a cat of nine tails against ones back. This is were most people fall into the trap of child abuse. Becuase the went farther then a mear spanking. It is expected of all parents to keep thier children in good stead and behavior, and to this means parents are given the power of corpral punishment.
So what are we americans really saying, is it that it's ok to beat your kids, we now they need it, just not infront of us.......or is it be snceable about punishing your children and wait till you cool off prior to puishing them so you do it out of love and compassion rather then anger?

Thank you all for allowing me to voice my humble opinion.

( Now lets see all the comments fly over this bit of tastey news )
