Two female Key Food employees at the Avenue A and East 4th Street store were attacked by a knife-wielding man. The police originally said one of the woman died, but it turns out that one is "clinging to life" while the other is in critical condition.
The Sun reports the women were in the "elevated manager's booth" when the attack took place at 3:15PM. According to WNBC, the attacker may have been a delivery man or employee, wearing a green jacket with the Canada Dry logo. The Sun got this comment from the store: "We can't give any comments right now. ... I'm doing ten things right now. We're still in the middle of talking to police."
Police are looking for the suspect, who fled on foot, with police dogs. Both victims are at Beth Israel in critical condition. The 25-year-old victim is in grave condition while the other was slashed in the torso and leg.

This is very unfortunate.
Among the grocery stores in the East Village / Alphabet City, this was the best balance of good prices, good selection, clean store, and avoiding the whole boutique-cheese-shop-whole-foods-8-dollars-for-2-ounces-handcut-apples thing that places like Gracefully have, or the whole nasty-bodega-with-mops-next-to-the-produce phenomenon.
tkchunc: I totally agree - that's where I used to shop when I lived in the East Village. It's definitely the best grocery store around there (or at least it was, before the Whole Foods opened). "Bourgeois" is a word that comes to mind for it... I can't believe this happened there.

WTF??? Are the above posts by the owners of Key Foods? That store is filthy and nasty. I would expect knifings to be a daily occurrence there.
i shop there 3x a week at least. i would expect this to happen at 315am, not in the middle of the afternoon. this is sad tho.
btw, the store is not that nice...in the back where the meat is, it smells like tripe and ass
but the people have always been nice, except for the big deli dude who messed up my order once and has been giving me the evil eye ever since.
What sucks is that you have these young girls, most likely from the inner city, trying to make ends meet and here you get a maniac making their lives even more miserable. BTW isn't there a brand new police precinct actually nearby, if I'm not mistaken...?!

Hello, fellow Larry, in real life that's my first name too. But I have to disagree with you.
They do an all-right job keeping the store relatively neat. It's no D'agostino or Gristedes, but it's okay for my tastes.
And there is no S in Key Food.
Larry: it's been four years since I've shopped there -- so either I'm overcome by nostalgia, or the place has gone downhill since then.

I'm so sad to hear that. I lived in the e-vill for 20 years and Key Food is a real place with no pretense. One of the few places that gals from the hood can get a steady gig. They work really hard and take a lot of insensitve crap from the newcomers in the area. Sad sad sad. My heart goes out to them.
What is up with these guys who are such ridiculous babies that they have to lash out violently at women who don't put up with their bullshit? Nobody ever taught them that dignity comes from within. Sad sad sad.

He has done a few stints in prison and is a little unhinged (outside of, you know, stabbing his ex gf to death), and he was also an employee of that Key Food. She broke up with him and he had some kind of psychotic break...my mom was IN the supermarket when it happened, and she said that he just skulked out, cool as a cucumber. Scary!
