Not That Dapper: John Gotti's Last Photo

2008_02_gottilast.jpgThe Smoking Gun, via a Freedom of Information Act request, received the last photograph taken of John Gotti, the former Gambino crime family head also known as the Dapper Don or Teflon Don.

According to TSG, the photo - a 1"x1" "institution commissary photo" was taken on "October 17, 2001, less than eight months before he died, at age 61" and two years after cancer surgery. Gotti was sentenced to life in prison in 1992, after being found guilty on 13 counts, including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, loansharking, racketeering, obstruction of justice, illegal gambling, and tax evasion.

The Post says the photo shows how he was "transformed from a debonair rogue who lived it up in $2,000 suits to a decrepit old man, with a gray T-shirt and a hangdog look." And check out Gotti's earliest prison mugshot from 1965. Let this be a lesson to you, Growing Up Gotti boys!

He deserved what he got.  He had it coming.  Think of how much more expensive he made all our lives with just the rising insurance costs for all the stealing, not to mention the hundreds if not thousands of lives he ruined with his drug trafficking.  He was a piece of trash and I'm glad he's gone.  I can't believe that there are still people who think he was a great man!  Moronic imbeciles!!!!

Prison sucks, no doubt. And I'm all for prison reform. However, we should not lose sight of the fact that Gotti was a murderous thug. Of course, I'm sure Steve Dunleavy has already penned a "Gotti was a prince" column for the Post. And those two Victoria Gottis are mouthing off about how their family has been wronged by the release of this photo. Have they ever apologized to any of the families of Gotti's victims? I doubt it. F**k John Gotti. And F**k his family, too.

Probably depends on how much garment he needed, Bickle.

I'd recommend Breslin's new book The Good Rat to anyone interested in Gotti and the gang. Interesting fact to come out of it... most of the old-time wiseguys think of Big John as the guy who killed the mob.

Sorry #6, I meant custom-tailored Brioni, from scratch.

For example, Tommy Hilfiger makes cheap clothes, but if I called him up and paid him to knit me a pair of custom-shaped underpants from scratch, he'd probably charge me more than $20.

and seriously, prison is not suitable for humans or animals (to preclude the lame comments that this could provoke). it's not. 99.9 percent of the people in prison don't deserve the conditions they have to endure, and for that 1 in a 1,000 who does deserve it, well, they put those people in supermax etc. the entire justice system is rigged against the accused (remember, accused does not mean guilty) and needs a serious overhaul, and i say this while saying that there are plenty of people who deserve fitting punishment for their crimes, prison being a suitable option in theory.

i guarantee the body ages at a faster rate in prison than outside of it, and you can forget about any kind of medical care if you happen to be incarcerated, regardless of the severity of the condition.

a bespoke brioni suit, at the only place where you can get a bespoke brioni suit, which is their shop in rome, goes for about $16,000. not that he was wearing bespoke brioni, but it's possible. emily dickinson, do your homework.

Some people just know how to live... a life of crime- courts- jail- lawyers!

  • JenChungsBaby

I would not have recognized him.

Someone from the Gotti family should have got that thug a rug.

  • aveB4life

c'mon guys, cancer to anyone isn't cool.

  • MyWittyName

    Goomba trash.

  • GUINEAPIG

A fitting death for a murderous lowlife goomba

    ptwnbrk,

Man, you are a bleeding heart. It's almost sickening to read your tripe. Plenty of thugs get released from jail buffed and in shape for get-out-of-jail celebratory crime spree. Look at the spring in his step as he pushes granny to the sidewalk and makes off with her purse. Marvel the athleticism.

No. A Brioni suit doesn't cost anywhere near $10-20,000. Not even close. You can get a bespoke suit from Dior, Lanvin or a bunch of other houses or custom tailors for half that. Even Tom Browne doesn't charge that much. Plus, Brioni suits are OK, but there are many custom tailors that do a better job for a tenth of that.

  • Bickle

Gotti wore Brioni suits. Those cost something around $10,000 to $20,000.

  • r_friend

Wow—I wouldn't have even recognized him... Did he lose all that hair in prison, or had he been wearing a rug all those years???

  • ptwnbkr

the saddest part is that this happens to so many of those left to die in the system. despite the crimes many committed and may not have committed, they are humans too, and the prison complex is utterly disgusting and not worthy of ANY human beings or living things for that matter!

gotti or not, it actually leaves a pit in my stomach!

He deserved what he got, which he had coming to him.  Just think how much more more expensive he made all our lives, what with all the stealing, rising construction costs, etc., which made insurance costs go up. A befitting end to an egotistical, egomaniacal piece of trash.  I can't believe there are still morons out there who considered him a "great man!"
