As the Turban Turns, Obama Leading Clinton into Polls

2008_02_barackwrap.JPGHillary Clinton and Barack Obama march into tonight's Ohio debate with their arms swinging over a 2006 photograph of Obama visiting Kenya. The Obama campaign blamed the Clinton campaign for "shameful" tactics, while the Clinton campaign denied responsibility and said the Obama campaign should be "ashamed" of thinking the photo would be controversial.

Yesterday, the Drudge Report claimed the photograph of Obama, wearing Somali dress while on a visit to Kenya, was allegedly circulated by a Clinton staffer who emailed, "Wouldn't we be seeing this on the cover of every magazine if it were HRC?" Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson said, "I just want to make it very clear that we were not aware of it, the campaign didn't sanction it and don't know anything about it."

However, Obama took the opportunity to say, "Everybody knows that whether it's me or Senator Clinton or Bill Clinton that when you travel to other countries they ask you to try on traditional garb that you have been given as a gift. The notion that the Clinton campaign would be trying to circulate this as a negative on the same day that Senator Clinton was giving a speech about how we repair our relationships around the world is sad.''

Clinton supporter Representative Stephanie Tubbs was interviewed by Pat Buchanan on MSNBC and said she had "no shame or no problem with people looking at Barack Obama in his native clothing." Wait, wouldn't that be some Hawaiian-American clothing? You may also remember Tubbs from Chris Matthews' interview of Obama supporter Texas State Senator Kirk Watson, who couldn't list any of Obama's achievements.

A new NY Times-CBS poll shows that Obama is seen as more electable than Clinton in a general election against John McCain. Which is probably why Washington Post reporter Dana Milbank found a Team Clinton presentation "a fascinating tour of an alternate reality." For instance, Harold Ickes said, "We're on the way to locking this nomination down."

Eh. Typical political mudslinging.

The Post always puts the stupidest stories on their front page. I remember the week of Lindsay Lohan on the cover.

Well, of course the Post - and Daily News, for that matter - had to run the photo of the cover. It's totally made for the tabloids.

Hillary just needs to run with Bloomberg as an independent ticket and everything will be okay.

I know of several photos with Hillary in a Muslim head scarf. When you got to Muslim countries you do this out of respect for the culture. Obama of course was doing the same.

Hillary has sunk to a new low.

"Hillary just needs to run with Bloomberg as an independent ticket and everything will be okay."

Yes because if there's anything this nation wants more is two New York politicians in the White House.

I doubt Bloomberg would want to run with Hillary.

Racial issues aside, I bet the Clinton camp is hoping this is Obama's Dukakis moment...

President Clinton 2: The Revenge
....this time it's personal

hillary = mom jeans: clicky

There is no proof the Clinton campaign transmitted the photo, unless you're prone to trusting Matt Drudge.

I think he looks more like Toad from Mario Bros.

"Thank you Mario! But our princess is in another castle."

Exactly what is the problem with Barack wearing traditional Somali garb on a diplomatic visit? Seriously? Is this the best they can do?

Papercutninja this Clinton showing that she is about action and not words.

poor Hillary. She finally found her voice.

However, Obama took the opportunity to say, "Everybody knows that whether it's me or Senator Clinton or Bill Clinton that when you travel to other countries they ask you to try on traditional garb that you have been given as a gift.
Hey, how come we don't do this to foreign dignitaries visiting the United States? Wouldn't you love to see Sarkozy wearing traditional American garb? Maybe jeans and cowboy hat or something.

And this photo proves that Bush and Putin are in thrall to the Chinese.

Desperate times call for desperate mesures. But this one is barackfiring. Could this mean the demise of Karl Rovian tactics? Or could be that Democrats are more sophisticated than Republicans.

Not sure if Obama is wearing "religious" clothing. But I get totally bent out of shape seeing non-Jews wearing yarmulke. What's that about? And it's so unfashionable.

TimSPC, All heads of state should be forced to wear an x-large Rocawear shirt, a trucker cap, skinny jeans, and crocs sandals the next time he or she visits NYC, just to cover the spread.

However you may spin it, that outfit just looks plain silly on a future Presidential candidate. Is it worn by young Somali school girls?

It is kind of sad that this is the best that they can do in the much feared Clinton "war room".

Is that costume made out of TP?

Is that costume made out of TP?

Why is everybody for certain this was released by Hillary? Wouldn't a leak from any random republican or conservative group just make about was much sense : 1) make Obama look like a terrorist; 2) have Hillary back pedal, saying she didn't issue it

This just seems too silly to be a Hillary ploy.

Yes, those colors just look plain wrong on a grown man, much less a future President...

I don't know whether or not the Clinton camp did this; but they are suspected of having expendable underlings do their dirty work. This may be a paranoid racist that is doing this. Al Sharpton maybe? :)

I wouldn't be surprised if the Obama camp leaked this, blamed it on Hillary, and then reaped the benefit of the backlash. They've been doing that sh*t this whole election season.

picture of hillary wearing muslim hijab.
muslowned

like when?

is this HRC's macaca moment?

obviously the post wants to blame this on Hilary, they can blame it on hilary and run the pic at the same time. shameless.

is this HRC's macaca moment?

The original story, which did not originate from the Daily News or the Post, places it as being sent by a Hillary staffer. The response from Maggie Williams didn't deny sending it, instead tried to spin it back to Obama "If Barack Obama's campaign wants to suggest that a photo of him wearing traditional Somali clothing is divisive, they should be ashamed."

It's a silly story, but along the same lines as other tactics Hillary has used. Like having Bill scold Vegas Democrats for voting to allow casino workers to participate in the caucus process in the workplace, or compare Obama to Jessie Jackson. Or Hillary's own suggestion that Michigan and Florida should count (not because it's fair, but because she needs those votes), or complaining that Obama fliers in Ohio misrepresent her position on health care and NAFTA and that this should be the subject of another debate (not like those points haven't already been covered in the last 20 or so debates).

It's a silly story, but does make Hillary look desperate and foolish. Along the same lines as other tactics Hillary has used. Like having Bill scold Vegas Democrats for voting to allow casino workers to participate in the caucus process in the workplace, or compare Obama to Jessie Jackson. Or Hillary's own suggestion that Michigan and Florida should count (not because it's fair, but because she needs those votes), or complaining that Obama fliers in Ohio misrepresent her position on health care and NAFTA and that this should be the subject of another debate (not like those points haven't already been covered in the last 20 or so debates).

the great thing about Obama is that he speaks to the people and helps them use their own minds and to not listen to the rhetoric of the media sounds bytes. i believe mudslinging in this election will have little effect. Obama is not just running for president he has started a movement and it's working very well.

OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT 2008!!!

HOW THE FUCK THIS RACIST!?
The joke is on all the politically correctness nonesense.

again:
HOW THE FUCK THIS RACIST!?

Like wearing a skirt or pants will amke or brake a person! come on! what is it... ?
I DO DON"T GET THE SCANDAL...maybe stupidity is what is totally offensive.

The scandal isn't what he's wearing, it's that the Hillary campaign would circulate it with the mindset that it might be perceived by some as muslim-type garb and therefore damage Obama.

This is a last ditch effort by Hillary's PR people to hopefully cause a jingoist backlash against Obama, because they realize Hillary is losing. It's that simple. If you don't think this is an orchestrated play by the Clinton folks, they you're clueless about how politics and the media work. It may be ineffectual, but the intent is clear.

What's funny to me, is that Drudge has become so powerful, that the Clinton campaign is willing to help him out with a scoop. How did Matt Drudge get famous? Oh, yeah, he broke the Lewinsky scandal.

This election has gotten so ill, that even the Evil PR person is grossed out.
