PSA For the Locked Out: Call a Locksmith

locksmith.jpgA 30-year-old man lost his life last night after locking himself out of his apartment. Sometime between 8:15 p.m. and 8:40 p.m., Paul Reilly fell five stories, landing on his back in the courtyard behind the building where he lived on 65th St. and 1st Ave. in Manhattan. Reilly, who had apparently gained entrance to the building but was locked out of his apartment, attempted to climb out a hallway window, over to a window in his apartment. "It was just an accident. He fell," a friend told the Daily News.

The New York Post describes a slightly different scenario, with Reilly attempting to scale the back wall, before losing his footing and crashing downwards into the courtyard. A neighbor in the building next door to Reilly told the Post, "I heard a clunk, a huge clunk. Then I heard some guy saying 'Oh, s- - -! Oh, s- - -!' really loud."

Reilly was taken to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell, where he was pronounced dead around midnight.

so his apartment is open then? i've got a friend looking for a place...

locksmiths are freaking vultures. this guy just should've kicked his door down.

confused by the picture?

locksmiths? did the picture confuse you?

One of the first Darwin Award nominees for 2008?

a 30 yr old fratty.
when I was living in the dorms guys would scale the window ledge to go from room to room. instead of, you know, use the hallways.
I'm guessing he slipped due to the wet/icy weather.

A locksmith wouldn't help much if I lost my apartment keys. Three ANSI Grade 1 commercial locks with Medeco cylinders, steel door frame, solid core steel door and reinforced strike mounted with six 3" offset screws. Can't be jimmied, kicked, picked or pried and would take at least six hours to drill through. Maybe a cutoff saw might work, but I don't think the building owner would like that. I'd have to use the window route.

For you low-lifes to go out of your way to comment on this guy's tragic accident is pretty much your greaser to hell. Yes, his attempting to enter via the window is questionable, but for you to poke fun at that shows you're the scum of the earth. Dev, Banana, Rfive and SP: this is how you start your days? Reading about people's deaths and ripping on them? Jacque and spirt: this is what you do with your lives in the afternoon? You're that pathetic this is your outlet? Maybe you should visit the funeral home in Port Jefferson on Wednesday or Thursday to experience emotion since you clearly are void of it. Sleep well tonight.
