Snow Finally Makes an Impact in 2008

After January hype - which resulted in rain - and a brief moment of snow last week, a winter snow storm finally made an appearance this year. Two weather disturbances resulted in many inches of snow falling in the region: By 2PM, more than 6 inches fell in the city, which is the biggest snowfall in two years and the biggest daily snowfall on the books (old record: 5.7 inches in 1948).
NY1 reports 6 inches fell in Central Park, 6.3 at JFK Airport and 8 inches in Staten Island! Before yesterday, only 5.7 inches had fallen all winter. Over 1,100 airplane flights were canceled at the three area airports. JetBlue, whose service came under fire after last year's February storm, is allowing customers to rebook their travel to certain cities (including NYC) between yesterday and this coming Wednesday without extra fees.
Mayor Bloomberg said that the timing of the storm was almost "perfect...We'll have the whole weekend to clean up the mess." He noted that the Sanitation Department was working hard to clear the roads, but also implored people to be very careful while driving.

Though air travelers, drivers, and home owners weren't too thrilled with the snow, there were some fans - the ones who got to enjoy the snowy goodness! The Parks Department, which had a "Snow Day" yesterday with sleds, hot chocolate, and Urban Park Ranger explaining how to find animal prints in the snow in parks around the city, said that almost 2,000 people enjoyed the event - and that 1,700 cups of hot chocolate were served.
Did you have a good or bad snow day?

I'm sure you mean the biggest daily snowfall for Feb. 22nd. Many bigger daily snowfalls than 6" have occurred...
Great timing...for me at least, it meant two straight 3-day weekends.

The snow was pretty beautiful when I left for work yesterday, until I got to midtown where it was pretty disgusting. It was good to actually see some real snow though.
I loved it! It didn't last too long before it started drizzling instead, but it was beautiful while it lasted! A bit slushy in midtown, though! Made me ask my galoshes: "where have you been all my life?" (for some reason my parents never got me rubber galoshes, I think they thought rubber galoshes promoted athlete's foot or something!) (ahem, so far I have had no problem of that type).
your weather forecasts SUCK!!!!! everyday it says the next day will be ~40 degrees but it's always around 30 degrees! and thankx for the heads up on the snowstorm.... Not! jeez, can't even predict tomorrows weather.
The timing couldn't have been WORSE for me...I was supposed to go to a reunion out of town that I was really looking forward to, but all the flights out were canceled yesterday (as well as the ones this morning, which made NO sense since everything had pretty much stopped by last night). So yeah, now I'm having a miserable weekend at home rather than partying with all my friends. Fucking weather.
Gwinny, I'm sorry you missed your flights. Maybe flights were canceled because they were worried about more snow? I hope your airline didn't give you too much grief.
The snow was gorgeous when it was coming down yesterday - one of my cats thinks snowflakes are bugs so she sat by the window and stared outside intently. The slush, though, was pretty gross, especially near a rusty fire hydrant. And cucarachita - I hear you on the galoshes. They are the best in this weather.
