KEXP Joins Forces With Radio New York

200802kexpnyc.jpgBack in 2004 we talked to KEXP deejay John Richards, who was here broadcasting from the (then named) Museum of Television and Radio. KEXP is a Seattle listener-supported station, but while they're based in the Pacific Northwest, they are heard worldwide via their online stream.

This month came the announcement of Radio Liberation, a collaboration between KEXP and Radio New York. Launching on March 24th the station "will air KEXP-produced programming Monday through Friday on Radio New York 91.5 FM. The programming will feature a three-hour drive-time eclectic music show followed by three simulcast hours of The Morning Show with John Richards, a nightly world music show and a weekly music variety show hosted by KEXP DJ and senior director of programming Kevin Cole."

The move will put KEXP into the ears of "another 14 million terrestrial listeners in New York," and will undoubtedly help Radio New York through the association with the well-branded Seattle station. As for KEXP, their further immersion into New York seems natural, given the station has been sponsoring shows here for years. Bands will also benefit; in the past KEXP was only in town broadcasting in-studio performances twice a year, whereas now there will be hundreds of in-studio performances per year based out of the city. Let the countdown begin, music fans (with radios)...

We left NYC for Seattle 3 months ago, and one of our peeves from NYC is the lack of great alternative music on the airwaves.

Seattle has a number of wonderful music stations, with KEXP leading the way.

New York, you are going to love it. And finally be able to put away your iPod in your car, because you'll be able to pick up awesome new music on the radio instead!

This is bad, bad, bad. What is the purpose of Radio New York, a city-owned radio station? Does playing mildly "alternative" music safe for upper-middle income listeners produced by a radio station funded by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen serve their mission? Are the people of the city better off by getting this programming?

Surely there are enough music-savvy people in the city that Radio New York could produce endless hours of New York-based programming. Why is a city agent not working to support the local music community? WNYC-FM, WFUV, WBAI and WFMU (whose fund-raising marathon begins Monday!) all already support various aspects of the local music scene by producing their own programming, highlighting local acts, sponsoring concerts, etc...

The city got rid of WNYC almost ten years ago. With this move isn't time it did the same with 91.5?

Dr. Zip, don't get your underwear in a bunch....KEXP is good music.

Billionaire funded, major label backed indie rock.

"lack of great alternative music on the airwaves."

Are f'ing kidding? Have you even turned on a radio since you moved here?

Hey whatever happened to that great UW station in Seattle? Or right, it was co-opted by Paul Allen for a failed museum and turned into pulpit for bands that need something to do when they aren't stumping for car companies during primetime televsion.

Go back to Seattle.

Um, WFUV or WFMU anyone? I actually dig and stream KEXP but that's a waste of resources that could be used to create new jobs/new stations here.

Outsourcing to other states; nice one.

What about having East Village Radio be on the waves instead of just on the net? They're nyc based and I believe have a parallel fan base.

I totally agree with the argument to not outsource our radio stations. I've been listening to Radio New York here... RadioNY.org

give it a try.

I love this station!!no matter what Dr Zip-it! says...pleease. I was SO tired of all the canned crap. btw DJ John, my DOB is 3/19/this area left blank intentionally!!
happy birthday my pisces bro!
