More Proof the NY State Legislature is Bloated

2008_02_nysthires.jpgThe NY State Legislature has long been considered the most dysfunctional state government in the country, and NY Sun has a great article giving weight to that statement: "The Empire State's Legislature employs more people than any other state legislature in the nation." Well, all that dysfunction has to be enabled from someone - or many someones!

According to the most recent data from the National Conference of State Legislatures, the NY State Assembly and Senate had 3,428 staffers, which, the Sun points out, is 500 more than Pennsylvania (2nd biggest staff) and is "more than 45% more than either California or Texas, the two most populous states in the union."

The Sun's infographic (pictured) illustrates just one part of the bloat, with details about the Senate minority party staff, because of a lawsuit filed against former Senate minority leader David Paterson, who is now the Lieutenant Governor. Former photographer charges Paterson, who is black, fired him because he's white. Joseph Maioriello claims Paterson told him he wanted a photographer "of color," a charge Paterson denied, explaining Maiorello had been a photographer under the previous Senate minority leader and he wanted "someone in that position whose loyalty to me was not in question."

Of course, why the Senate minority would needs it own photographer is another issue. The California State Senate minority spokesman tells the Sun, "We have one camera that we throw to one another as events come up. Generally, it's whoever is available to take pictures."

And here's a summary of why the State Legislature is so damn dysfunctional.

And people wonder why their taxes are so damned high. Fire them all and maybe retired folks wont have to move to cheaper taxed states or eat cat food to survive. Just another example of the Tammany style of government NY has had for 300 years.

    @ Outter

I think they should just get someone who is literally grayscale.

"Loyalty"? In real world, a staff photographer would be hired & employed on account of his/her skills, not "loyalty".

Er, Sen.Paterson is legally blind. Color shouldn't matter to him, in more ways than one.

A PHOTOGRAPHER???!! NOOOO!!! I CAN"T BELIVE WHAT I JUST READ!!! THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!!! IT"S TIME TO HANG THESE MOTHERFUCKERS!!!

Why does it matter that one of the 135 people on staff is a photographer? To me it seems more egregious that, you know, there are a hundred and thirty five people.

  • Outter Burrougher

No, no, they totally meant a photograph of color - the other guy was still using a black & white.

(I do not mean to insult Gothamist with the sarcasm; I just felt it was the obvious sarcastic remark).

Our byzantine state government accomplishes little outside of leeching our tax dollars to line their own pockets.
