Senators and rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama met at the University of Texas in Austin tonight for the CNN/Univision debate. The debate was less a showdown than an "agree to disagree" type affair. You can read a transcript here and clips will start to appear, but, per Austinist, here are some of best lines of the night:
“I have to confess, I was somewhat amused, the other night, when, on one of the TV shows, one of Senator Obama's supporters was asked to name one accomplishment of Senator Obama, and he couldn't.” -- ClintonClinton attacked Obama's "plagiarism," saying, "Lifting whole passages from someone else's speeches is not change you can believe in, it's change you can Xerox," but Obama's response was "The notion that I had plagiarized from somebody who was one of my national co-chairs who gave me the line and suggested that I use it, I think, is silly, and, you know, this is where we start getting into silly season, in politics, and I think people start getting discouraged about it.”“Senator Clinton of late has said: Let's get real. The implication is that the people who've been voting for me or involved in my campaign are somehow delusional. (Laughter) And that, you know, the 20 million people who've been paying attention to 19 debates and the editorial boards all across the country at newspapers who have given me endorsements, including every major newspaper here in the state of Texas.” -- Obama
“We need to end George Bush's war on science.” -- Clinton
“I do not want two classes of citizens in this country.” -- Obama
As for who won, it could be argued Obama won because Clinton failed to knock him out. In closing, Clinton's remarks, as Newsweek's Richard Wolffe put it, "seemed to acknowledge her opponent's strengths and the possibility that she might not win." Of course, her campaign felt it was a strong finish (it did include her pretty great response about being tested and her saying she's "honored" to be in campaign against Obama), what with the standing ovation and all and put the video online:

Don't these people have a day job?
When were they last in Washington doing their jobs as senators? Or do senators basically do nothing so they can get away with this bullshit month after month?
I've been thinking the same thing Snoopy. Isn't Clinton suppose to be doing things for NYS?
Michelle Obama's America -- And Mine
By Michelle Malkin
February 20, 2008
Like Michelle Obama, I am a "woman of color." Like Michelle Obama, I am a working mother of two young children. Like Michelle Obama, I am a member of the 13th generation of Americans born since the founding of our great nation.
Unlike Michelle Obama, I can't keep track of the number of times I've been proud -- really proud -- of my country since I was born and privileged to live in it.
At a speech in Milwaukee this week on behalf of her husband's Democratic presidential campaign, Mrs. Obama remarked, "For the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country, and not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change."
Mrs. Obama's statement was met with warm applause from other Barack supporters who have apparently also been devoid of pride in their country for their adult lifetimes. Or maybe it was just a Pavlovian response to the word "change." What a sad, empty, narcissistic, ungrateful, unthinking lot.
I'm just seven years younger than Mrs. Obama. We've grown up and lived in the same era. And yet, her self-absorbed attitude is completely foreign to me. What planet is she living on? Since when was now the only time the American people have ever been "hungry for change"? Michelle, ma belle, Barack is not the center of the universe. Newsflash: The Obamas did not invent "change" any more than Hillary invented "leadership" or John McCain invented "straight talk."
We were both adults when the Berlin Wall fell, Michelle. That was earth-shattering change.
We've lived through two decades' worth of peaceful, if contentious election cycles under the rule of law, which have brought about "change" and upheaval, both good and bad.
We were adults through several launches of the space shuttle, in case you were snoozing. And as adults, we've witnessed and benefited from dizzyingly rapid advances in technology, communications, science and medicine pioneered by American entrepreneurs who yearned to change the world and succeeded. You want "change"? Go ask the patients whose lives have been improved and extended by American pharmaceutical companies that have flourished under the best economic system in the world.
If American ingenuity, a robust constitutional republic and the fall of communism don't do it for you, hon, then how about American heroism and sacrifice?
How about every Memorial Day? Every Veterans Day? Every Independence Day? Every Medal of Honor ceremony? Has she never attended a welcome home ceremony for the troops?
For me, there's the thrill of the Blue Angels roaring over cloudless skies. And the somber awe felt amid the hallowed waters that surround the sunken U.S.S. Arizona at the Pearl Harbor memorial.
Every naturalization ceremony I've attended, where hundreds of new Americans raised their hands to swear an oath of allegiance to this land of liberty, has been a moment of pride for me. So have the awesome displays of American compassion at home and around the world. When millions of Americans rallied to help victims of the 2004 tsunami in Southeast Asia -- including members of the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group that sped from Hong Kong to assist survivors -- my heart filled with pride. It did again when the citizens of Houston opened their arms to Hurricane Katrina victims and folks across the country rushed to their churches, and Salvation Army and Red Cross offices to volunteer.
So, people with jobs shouldn't run for President? Is that what you're saying? That leaves the idle rich, the unemployed, and apparently 50-year old men who post dozens of inane, moronic and often racist comments to Gothamist each day from their mom's spare bedroom.
The is the video of Obama's supporter not being able to list his accomplishments is hilarious.
(sigh)
Wow, jerrychui, Have you heard of posting a LINK?? Hello??
In case you hadn't noticed, we do need change.
I'm soooo glad Mrs. Malkin and you can wave the flag and Mention The fall of the Berlin Wall in Germany, The space shuttle (that this administration wants to cut funding to NASA), Mentioning the robust constitutional republic (that this administration has eroded), U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group (that this administration refuses to give a pay raise) and all sorts of Flag waving events.
Oddly, None of which addresses the last 7 years of corruption, incompetence, Illegal spying, Torture, the Economy, lying before congress, etc. etc. that Michelle Obama was talking about. Hmmm, How Odd...
It's a common gag often used by the right wing that you perfectly demonstrate. Can't challenge the message, go for the messenger.
But seriously, You and her just go wave the flag and go totality ape shit over a single sentence.
Run along and play. Let the adults get some work done.
Copyright violation! jerrychui, you better watch out because Malkin will be pissed. And when nutjobs get pissed, people's lives are destroyed.
hillary is a cunt
#1, excellent question.
jerrychui, you got served.
Politics is an interesting business, unique in several ways.
For one, it is the only job where you can search for the next job, while getting paid for the current one. Most people would get fired for that. Clinton, Obama, and McCain essentially skipped the last half of 2007 - http://www.adaction.org/2007.pdf.
Second, it's the only business where you can take actual, cold hard cash to have your opinion influenced. Payola has been banned in radio, advertising, banking, justice, and just about everywhere else. But to make the laws, cash (bribing) is legal.
Regardless of who you are supporting, you have to admit this was hilarious:
Obama supporter Texas Senator Kirk Watson can't name a single Obama achievement on MSNBC
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jj4VK9wVAi0
"For one, it is the only job where you can search for the next job, while getting paid for the current one."
Cool (Nice alias),Best description of a politician I've ever heard.
"likesrudylikesbooty" (Odd Alias!), I saw that too. I bet he learned to be better prepared on his next Interview!
Michelle Malkin is an asshat....
You stay classy, Hugh Gass.
She may be finished now, but nothing prevents Hillary running simultaneously for the Senate & the Presidency in 2012. Another perk of being in politics.
I expect Clinton machine to try to damage
Obamessiah thus preventing him from winning in November. Mccain would be too old to run again in '12, but with powers of incumbency, Barack would have a good chance for a second term. Hillary cannot wait until 2016. She too will be old by then.
It was depressing to see those two Socialists from Illinois try to out-pander each other. Something for everybody as long as "rich" would pay for it.
I've noticed the NY post and fox are starting to attack obama recently after they were attacking clinton for so long. Classic republican strategy where they want both sides to be evenly matched so they keep dragging this battle out and destroying the democrats in the process.
To counter the Obama supporter video, here is a clip of Clinton supporter Susan Estrich, who wrote a book "The Case for Hillary Clinton" (so presumably would know something about Hillary), but can't provide any specifics about Hillary's policy positions on Iraq or Illegal immigrants.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6GoiK82eMQ
Granted, the interviewer is Bill O'Reilly, but the tenor of the interview is no different than the Chris Matthews questioning of some random Obama supporter.
Did anyone watch this debate? I usually try to watch these (and I realize it's available on youtube and elsewhere) but at this point I think I'm suffering from debate fatigue, and I'm probably not alone. I doubt they said anything we haven't heard before -- from the gothamist highlights, it looks like outside of a couple of new "gotcha" lines, it was more of the same.
It was a very civil debate and the hand grab at the end was heartwearming. I think Hill knows her time is up. Perhaps there is hope for an Obama/Clinton ticket.
Um, isn't almost everybody who's still running for president presently an elected office holder? Even Huckabee was still governor for the first YEAR of his presidental bid.
I don't hold out any hope for an Obama/Clinton ticket. While some voters might like that, there's nothing in it for the candidates. Obama would always have to watch his back with Hillary, and also have to worry about Bill's ability to get the spotlight. Hillary, meanwhile, would be reminded daily of her loss, when she could just return to the Senate and maybe accomplish something. Plus god forbid anything happen to Obama ... I have no doubt where suspicion would lay.
"Obamessiah"? "two Socialists"?
(sigh)
1. The "Cult of Obama" is just GOP Propaganda, nothing more.
2. There not socialists, despite the other GOP propaganda. And, Yeah, the "Capitalist" GOP has been doing such a Fine job since 1995 when they won the house.... As if.
3. Unrelated: Does your family make over 200K a year? If not the "Tax Cuts" don't affect you.
4. "Pander"? Can you say "John McCain"?
Let's see, He was against Torture and now he's for it?
He's now changed his stand on "Tax Cuts".
How about "immigration Reform"? O Yeah, he's "adjusted" his stance on that too.
Hmmm, there must be something he hasn't "adjusted"...
I know! "Lobby Reform"! No, Wait a minute...
What's the term? O yeah, "Flip flopping".
But Clinton and Obama are socialist...
The Estrich video is hilarious as well, but I think the look on that Texas Senator's face is priceless.
At least he was a good sport about it. His statement:
http://www.kirkwatson.com/media/whats-new/2008/02/20/msnbc-and-me/
It just goes to show that if you want to be a vocal supporter for your candidate on national TV, at least be prepared to answer some basic criticism. Especially on circus acts like the O'Reilly Factor and Hardball.
jerrychui, thanks for posting the Malkin piece. It makes a lot more sense than the mindless Obamabots on Gothamist ever do.
malkin iz filipino, no?
nuff sed. I mean horizontal.
for me, I couldn't give a rats ass about the Berlin wall falling, I'm American.
wow, SD, that's some anti GOP rant, you might want to check your blood pressure.
This conversation is really about Obama and Hillary, although Hillary is becoming less and less relevant as she continues to lose primaries, money and support.
JacqueMehoff, I don't think a reprint of the Maklin essay belongs in the comments section, however, the Berlin Wall falling was important for the US, a sign of the end of the cold war.
Your comments about Malkin as a filipino say a lot about you. I see that your self-description says:
"Yep, Jack MeHoff. and, you can't stop me cause I speak the truth, C You in Hellie I'm also known by my asian name, suc mie off"
so I guess your attitude towards asians is something you particularly identify with.
I'm also, Oliver Klosehoff
and Wood U. bendover.
but it's horizontal.
What's up with Hillary's Dracular collar? Pretty funny outfit!
I thought the debate was just more of the same old bla bla bla. But Hillary's getting a little frayed around the edges. That plagiarism accusation was already old. In particular, the reference to "xerox" really dates her. At lease she didn't say "mimeograph!"
Michelle Malkin is the most hateful person going. Even O'Reilly stopped bringing her on his joint.
Mrs. Obama's comment was a mistake because there really is a lot about America to be proud of during her lifetime. But, I don't really think she meant what she said.
The whole controversy is just another political distraction that HELPS the GOP by creating an issue to take time away from something important. It feeds into a big lie that liberals hate America. Oh, and, worst of all, it might lead to 15 more minutes for Lee Greenwood.
I am glad that Gothamist included this quote from Clinton: “We need to end George Bush's war on science.” This is a huge issue that sometimes goes below the radar.
eyekantspel, Thanks, but my blood pressure is fine.
This conversation is really about Obama and Hillary? Well, tell that to jerrychui. As for nik13, he mentioned "Obamessiah" and "two Socialists" so I contrasted it against the apparent GOP candidate. He also mentioned that he thinks they "try to out-pander" each other, so I thought I'd show him an expert at pandering.
Me, I'm not sure who I prefer. Both Sen. Obama and Sen. Clinton have a lot to offer, while all the GOP candidate, IMO, do not.
As for the GOP, there are some members that I do like, but tragically, they are in the NY State Senate, not the national arena.
Re: JacqueMehoff, I just ignore comments like his latest one.
that's the smartest thing to do.
life's too short, my friend.
I compiled a list of links on my blog regarding Obama's legislation accomplishments both in Illinois and the US Senate, in case anybody wants to educate themselves on Obama's accomplishments.
My favorites: mandatory videotaping of police suspects in Illinois and cleaning up loose nukes around the world.
