Miss Brooklyn is Back

2008_02_missbklyn.jpgThe Miss Brooklyn Pageant is coming back to town this coming Saturday after a 16-year absence from the scene (and they've returned in the MySpace age). The winner of the night will advance to the Miss New York Pageant, having a shot at becoming Miss America herself.

Kim Thomas, executive director of the Miss Brooklyn Scholarship Program, told The Brooklyn Paper that, “The face of Miss America has changed. We’re looking for someone outgoing and fun with spunk and spice to her. [A woman] who doesn’t fit the mold of Miss America from the 1960s and ’70s. Miss New York — and possibly Miss America — is going to be from Brooklyn this year!”

There are only eight contestants competing in the pageant (or if you prefer, "scholarship program"), entrants must be in the 17 to 24 age range. After showing off swimsuits and evening gowns, they'll each do a little song and dance (or whichever talent makes them shine), as they battle it out for the tiara (and a $1,000 scholarship, makeup and hair consultations).

You can buy tickets to the Brooklyn showdown here. As for the Miss America Pageant, last year Miss New York was from Bay Ridge (pictured); a New Yorker hasn't taken home the crown since 1984 (Vanessa Williams resigned the crown after nude photographs were sold - without her permission - to Penthouse).

Best news of the weekend. BTW lovely girl...(cough cough)

she's originally from PA, moved here for school. hardly brooklyn representation, although she does look a bit guidette-ish

Seriously?! She's supposed to represent 'beauty' and grace? She must have a nice bo.... er, brain.

Yay, institutionally objectifying women! That's what we like to see. Every woman should aspire to be a Miss Whatever, right?

Score: +1 for the feminazis.

Oooh! My favorite events are the black North Face jacket show and the screaming to each other on the subway contest.

She's got spunk? I hate spunk!

Come on, guys. Just because she's got a Jimmy Durante/Sarah Jessica Parker-style schnozz. Give her a break. Could have been worse. Could have been like Karl Malden.

Oh, by the way, Vanessa did another nudie pic last year. The passage of 23 years has been kind to her.

I bet you can tell she's from long island when she opens her mouth (they pronounce the G in LONG).

BTW - why does anyone know why they stop doing the Miss Brooklyn contest 16 years ago anyway?

I bet there were issues the ozone layer due to the tons of Final-net hair spray used during the pageant to sculpt the then popular 'big hair' look (circa 1982).

she has a nice mustache...

They're going to need barrels of Nair too.

"[A woman] who doesn’t fit the mold of Miss America from the 1960s and ’70s." ????

If my son ever showed up at my door step with a girl wearing a tiara. He would be disowned. In fact I would kill him because there would be no hope for having grandchildren which would be suitable for continuing any intelligent life in the universe.

why does that girl have a schnoz...?

While we're on the subject of 80s remakes this weekend, I would think that Miss Tiara here would be a shoo in for "Blossom"...

That's the first thing I thought freddy..

Ha!
