THEATER: Today theater critic Charles Isherwood devotes over 1,000 words of praise and plenty of precious New York Times real estate to the Public Theater “Lab” production of Mom, How Did You Meet the Beatles?, but he doesn’t really make clear that the show is essentially a staged reading – one that Robin Rothstein deems “static and dull.” Still, the story does sound intriguing; written by the esteemed Adrienne Kennedy, with help from her son Adam, it’s based on her experiences developing a play based on John Lennon’s books of nonsense prose and poetry, “In His Own Write” and “A Spaniard in the Works.” The project takes her to London with her then 5-year-old son, less than $500 and a handful of tenuous connections; an increasingly glamorous series of chance encounters ensue and Laurence Olivier backs the production. Isherwood notes that “her affectionate recollections of brief encounters with the Fab Four restore the plain humanity to these already legendary figures.” She had just better hope Yoko doesn’t catch wind of this! – John Del Signore

8pm // The Public Theater [425 Lafayette St] // Tickets cost $10
