Two-Alarm Fire at Hunts Point Market

2008_02_hpfire2.jpg2008_02_hpfire1.jpg

This evening, there was a two-alarm fire at the Hunts Point Market in the Bronx. Hunts Point Cooperative Market, the "Largest Food Distribution Center in the World," is where many meat and meat products are processed and distributed in the tri-state area.

Over 100 firefighters were on the scene to fight the fire and the main fire has been extinguished. No injuries have been reported yet and the Fire Department does not know the cause of fire.

The market, at 355 Food Center Drive, is next to the Terminal Produce Market and the new Fulton Fish Market. Overall, authorities have kept an eye on possible organized crime influence from the market (in 2006, they busted a sports betting ring there).

"You fools I never said what a full second alarm response was. I was saying what constituted a second alarm after the intitial all hands. If the chief (Batallion or Divison) asks for an additonal ladder and engine over the all hands than they have to post a second alarm."

You're absolutely wrong about this one too Snoopy.

You actually couldn't be more off base. If asking for 1+1 on top of an all hands assignment constituted a 2nd alarm, then there would be 5 2nd alarms a day.

You're wrong. Please stop trying to speak so matter-of-factly about things you obviously know nothing about.

okay, seriously, how much meat was burned in the fire?

on a related note, back in November, a fire at a farm in Burlington County, NJ killed between 1000 and 1500 pigs that were trapped inside three barns that caught fire. http://www.nj.com/southjersey/index.ssf/2007/11/about_1500_pigs_die_in_burling.html

Yeah, Snoopy, stick to what you do best, that is posting snarky racist comments.

The problem is he's not even good at that. Most people already ignore him. And on top of that, he's too dumb to figure out that the error messages here on Gothamist mean nothing.

BTW, wasn't this all supposed to have been sorted out last Christmas when Jake swore we wouldn't get any more errors after Gothamist got a new server? Nice work, guys.

    What about the hookers?

How much higher will meat prices go up? And what will happen to the poor carrots?

    GREENPINKOS!

    Snoopy got pwned, as usual.

  • Toby von Meistersinger

Snoopy, the fire department where you come from may just send another engine for a second alarm, since things like that vary from department to department depending on their size and resources.

You can find a simplified list of the FDNY Dispatch Policy here which explains what gets sent to what type of incident and other policies.

    Or ELF? :(

  • Hey NICE GASH

When a fire goes to a second alarm, that means the addition of the following on top of the original assignment.

    5 engines

    2 trucks

    1 satellite

    4 chiefs

    1 field com unit

    1 tactical support unit

a bit more than one extra engine & one extra truck don't you think snoopy?

    That means a total of:

    9 engines

    5 trucks

    1 satellite

    6 Battalion Chiefs

    1 Division chief

    1 Rescue

    1 Squad

    1 field com

    1 tac support unit

for a full 2nd alarm assignment.

  • Hey NICE GASH

"Actually a two alarm fire is not that large a fire. If you ask for an extra truck or engine over an all hands it goes to a second alarm. A lot of it is based on the size and type of the occupancy, as well as exposures."

Sorry snoopy you buff, but you're totally wrong.
