Gusty Cold Today, Dreaded Wintry Mix Tomorrow

flurry_021108.jpg
The cold and windy conditions that caused problems yesterday will continue through the day today. Today's high will be around 25 but the wind chill will stay around zero degrees for most of the day. With wind chills that low it is a good idea to cover up if you will be outside for more than a few minutes. We were reminded of this when our cherubic cheeks started getting numb on Gothamist's walk to work.

The winds will begin to die down tonight and tomorrow won't be as cold as today. Chances look good for real snow tomorrow afternoon. It is the same old story, cold front from the Midwest slamming into a developing coastal storm. At this time it looks as if the heaviest snow will be over Orange County and western New Jersey, where a winter storm watch for tomorrow has been posted. Let's hope they have enough salt. We may see a half- to a whole inch of snow in the city tomorrow afternoon. It is going to warm throughout the day tomorrow, meaning the snow will probably mix with rain late in the afternoon before changing over to all rain Tuesday night.

This is shaping up to be a very wet storm. If only it would stay cold! Alas, Wednesday should warm to the mid-40s, meaning we'll see an inch or two of rain instead of a foot of snow. The latter part of the week is looking sunny and seasonable with highs in the low-40s Thursday and Friday.

The closest significant snowfall to us is in Springfield Missouri....

I'm getting really sick of these asshole weather people.

so an inch of snow now constitutes a "winter storm watch"

joke!

Joe you are as far from an "asshole weather" person as physically possible... I thoroughly enjoy your reports (much more than anyone on TV- although Bill Ritter does kind of make me laugh in the mornings).

I miss snow.

Weather forecasting is part art and part science - and on TV it is (shock of all shocks) ratings generated. So it of course is more of a hook to "it may snow" when doing promotions, when it just is flurries to a dusting.

One thing that a meteorologist once told me is that snow is one of the hardest things to accurately predict. So always keep that in mind!

it will snow in March like last year.
