West Side Water Main Break

2008_02_westmain.jpg
Photographs by SilvaAzniv on Flickr (left, right); the steam in the right photo is from Con Ed - not a fire

At West End Avenue and West 59th Street, a water main broke, flooding the Amtrak tracks. The FDNY is pumping out the water and a number of other city agencies, including the Office of Emergency Management and Department of Environmental Protection are on the scene. According to other reports, a new building (an expansion of John Jay Collage) at the intersection is also flooded.

We haven't heard if Amtrak service is affected by the flooding.

of course Amtrak service is Affeted. that's the main line to Penn from the northern corridor.

However, maybe they can reroute Amtrak to Grand Central.

i wonder if this has anything to do with why my cable internet has been sucking a fat one today.

I was in Penn earlier today, and there was notice posted that passengers to Albany were being taken to Grand Central by bus, and going on to Albany from there. I was just passing through so i wasn't paying too much attention, but nobody seemed too put out; perhaps all the north-bound customers had figured out it'd be faster to walk to GC.

My cable is sucking wind too!!

Amtrack isn't able to be in Grand Central because their dual-mode diesel locomotives have different third rail shoes compared to Metro North.
