Pedro, Mets Speak Out on Cockfighting Video

2008_02_pedrocf2.JPG2008_02_pedrocf3.JPG

Mets pitcher Pedro Martinez, as well as the Mets organization, made statements about the video of Martinez appearing at a cockfighting event in the Dominican Republic.

From Pedro Martinez: "I understand that people are upset, but this is part of our Dominican culture and is legal in the Dominican Republic. I was invited by my idol Juan Marichal to attend the event as a spectator, not as a participant."

From the Mets: "We do not condone any behavior that involves cruelty to animals. We understand, however, that in many other countries, activities such as bull-fighting and cock-fighting are both legal and part of the culture."

Additionally, the video, they say, is two years old (not that it changes what it shows or the fact that it was worth slipping a huge graphic about it into Lost last night). Here it is - please be warned, it may be disturbing to some readers.

The Humane Society weighed in, with president Wayne Pacelle saying, "It doesn't excuse the behavior to find a legal haven for this reprehensible and inhumane conduct. It's animal cruelty, no matter where it occurs. Animal fighting has no place whatsoever among those who presume to be role models for youngsters. Not in this country, and not elsewhere."

In some "cultures", performing cliterectomies on pubescent girls is the norm too. Does that make it ok? When will we have the courage to move away from cultural relativism?

I don't see the big deal. They just verbally said it's part of their culture. Hispanics like to cockfight, Blacks like to dogfight, whites like to eat cottage cheese. It's all part of their individual culture.

so if you were visiting a place where its their culture to eat you... would that be ok?

how is this any worse then the mass slaughtering of chickens and cows on a daily basis? please people, get a life, i bet these cocks would rather fight then be dinner!

In the video, Pedro Martinez certainly seem to be having a good time stroking his friend's cock. And if that doesn't earn a million google hits, I don't know what will.

A man like that,
Who'd smack Don Zimmmer:
Forget that man.
He's such a sinner!

(With apologies to Steven Sondheim)

I agree. Let's get away from cultural relativism. Cuz, you know, ours is the dominant culture of our times. We are right. Everyone else is wrong. If you are not with us, you are against us, you infidel dogs ... or cocks, as it may be.

And did I mention that Hitler was a vegetarian. How did this come up? Connect the dot.

Have any of you ever seen a live cockfight? I find them to be incredibly entertaining (especially when you make a side bet). They used to hold a lot of them in East Harlem before they cleaned it up.

OK. I just saw the video. That was pretty cool.

If Pedro should do anything, he should tell children of america (who he's supposed to be setting a good example to) that they should obey the law of the country they're in. Basta.

I hardly compare a chicken to a human being. I'm sorry. I can't even consider that clitorectomy comparison. That's ridiculous.

A chicken is food, it's not even intelligent. And cocks fight anyway, without prompting from humans, don't they? I am NOT going to get all worked up about a chicken. It's not like Pedro doused a poor chicken in gasoline and set fire to it for a laugh, you know!

'And did I mention that Hitler was a vegetarian. How did this come up? Connect the dot.'

That's an urban myth. It gets bandied about a lot, and has been reported in a few of the more sensational Hitler biographies, but it isn't true. Hitler was manic about record keeping, and he kept track of his meals. He did eat quite a bit of veggie meals, but sausages etc. pop up quite often as well. Veggies don't eat sausages.

Regardless of different cultures and laws, I believe that it is lesser evolved HUMAN BEINGS that find animal cruelty entertaining, period. Would a true spiritual leader or public peace-making figure argue that this is justifiable? NO.
The issue is not whether animals would be fighting on their own, whether they "would rather" fight or be our dinner, should they eaten or not...
It's simply about us exerting force over a weaker species for no reason. Just because one CAN exploit the weak doesn't mean they SHOULD. This applies in different ways, to many, many facets of life on earth. How is abusing and exploiting animals for cheap entertainment value ever truly justifiable? How does this have any place in our growth and evolution as a so-called "more intelligent" species?
