Feds Round Up Mobsters All Over NYC
This morning, federal agents have arrested over 50 members of the Gambino, Genovese and Bonanno crime families in New York City, New Jersey, and Long Island. Authorities are calling this the "biggest mafia bust in more than 20 years."
The Post reports the 80-count indictment includes charges of murder, labor racketeering, "racketeering conspiracy, extortion, , theft of union benefits, mail fraud, false statements, loan sharking, embezzlement of union funds, money laundering and illegal gambling." One of those named, Gambino acting boss John "Jackie Nose" D'Amico, has not been arrested (he may be on vacation - what a week to be on one!). However, a few years ago, D'Amico told the Daily News, "I'm the boss of my house and my bathroom."
About half the mobsters are from the Gambino crime family. A source told the Post:
"I can't think of a larger single day roundup of substantial [La Cosa Nostra] figures," said one source. "I just can't think of a day that had this many arrests. Probably none in the last 10 years."Additionally, the News says mobsters in Sicily will be arrested because "the Sicilian wiseguys have ties to the Gambino crime family through reputed New York soldier Franki Cali.""It dismantles the infrastructure of the family," the source added. "You can't say its the death knell because you dont know. It will still exist, to the point where it becomes increasingly difficult for the family to operate as it has in the past."
You can read the indictment here (PDF), via WNBC. A number of agencies were involved with the arrests: The FBI, ICE, NY State Police, Attorney General's office and the NYPD

COSA Nostra...

Forget Chinese New Year, it's Mafia Armegedon Day.
Imagine what Rudy might be thinking right now? Talk about getting kicked while you're down!
Man when they cancelled the Sopranos they really meant it!
ICE?!? Who are they?
Immigration and Customs Enforcement
Yeah, the timing of all this certainly makes you wonder - perhaps another swipe from some of his former "colleagues" from the Southern District..?
